yesterday I bought a puppy and the owners told me he is a maltese and even let me see his parents, who look full maltese. (They also gave me the vet papers that said maltese on it) Even though he looked kind of different from them I still bought him anyway because he is extremely cute! But when I got home I realized he looks exactly like a pomeranian. Please look at his picture and tell me what you think. Also does it cost money just to take him to a vet to find out the breed?

He already had all his shots and wont be needing them until early september next year. But does the vet charge just to take a look at him?

Believe it or not im really not mad if they gave me a pom instead because he is extremely smart and very well behaved! Its amazing how good he is. And he is very beautiful. The $325 I spent on him was well worth it.

you my friend got your dog from a back yard breeder.
since you didn't receive registration papers with the AKC saying he was purebred Maltese then there is no way of knowing for sure unless you get his DNA tested. the dogs that you say that were his parents may not have been . this back yard breeder could have got the dog from anywhere and told you the 2 Maltese were his parents. the dog may be older then he was said to be and may be unhealthy. since you have already bought the dog learn from your mistake and love the dog no matter what. i personally think he is a Pomeranian.make an appointment with the vet to get him fixed , then you can ask what breed they think he is .but vets are not experts on dog breeds but on dog health .

Im a breeder of the Maltese and the Pomeranian breed and this pup is definately a Pomeranian,or it could possible be crossed with a Maltese, but seriosly doubt it.The Vet couldn't tell you positively if this was a Pom ,or Maltese, but if you received any registration papers on this pet when you purchased,it should tell you if a cross of purebred. If you have registration papers on the pet,you could contact the kennel club this pup is registered with and tell them you have a question about whether or not it is purebred. They will check the DNA on the pup and inform you of a cross or purbred. If sold to you as a Maltese purebred, the breeder will have to show the parents DNA and then you will know what you have, but would suggest that this pup isn't a purebred Maltese.

He looks more like a pomeranian to me. He may have some Maltese in him. But a maltese has extremely long hair, that tends to hang down in the dogs eyes, your dog is not like that. I don't know if a vet would charge for that or not. You could just wait until next September when you take him for his shots or if something unexpected comes up that requires taking him to the vet, you could ask then. By the way he is a beautiful little dog.

he's definitely mostly pomeranian, if not all. the parents they showed you are either not the parents, or they are mixes that just happen to look mostly maltese. The vet won't have any idea, and they generally don't care. All they care about is making sure the dog is healthy, they don't care about breed, and usually don't know much anyways. Best person to ask is a groomer. They're trained to research and study BREEDS because it's what their job is all about.
Honestly, papers mean nothing nowadays. All it means is that the dog has pedigreed parentage, and even that can't really be proved, because the papers can say that "Muffy mated with Walter to produce these expensive puppies", when actually, "Muffy" was a little hussy and got busy with "Rosco", the tramp from across the street.

I would guess he is a cross - but I haven't met any pom pups, or any maltese pups, so that is ONLY a guess!
Also, NO vet - or any person in the world, can tell you 100% what breed ANY dog is....as much as LOADS of people will answer you in authoritive tones, it is simply NOT possible. Obiously pom people, and maltese people can make a very educated GUESS, but that is as accurate as you can get.
Vets papers mean nothing (well, they don't in th UK) the vet will write any breed you tell him/her. Breed isn't hugely important to a vet as they deal with the biology and anatomy, and the breed is a secondary condsideration.
If you had doubts, you probably shouldn't hve gone ahead and lined the pockets of [possible] dihonest breeders - but you DID, so stop fretting, and ENJOY your adorable pup, whatever his parentage is!

I'm realy not sure why he looks like a pomeranian. Maybe the owner let the ***** get pregnent by mistake. He's gorgeous, but looks nothing like a maltese. His head is too foxy.
White pomeranians are very hard to come by, though. I'm sure you will take care of this little pup regardless of the breed.
I would ask the breeders for my money back, as they sold you what you did not ask for.

He might be a mix, but he's absolutely NOT full maltese. I hope that you did not pay "full-breed" price for this little darling. Your puppy certainly looks more like a pom, but you CAN see a little of the maltese in him. Whatever the case, he is absolutely cute as a button!!!

Looks like a pom to me too. Which makes me think the vet papers you got with it are fake or not for that pup. Soooo, you don't really know the pup had any vet care or shots unless you yourself took him. If you haven't be safe and do so. While you are there your vet can tell you his or her opinion on the breed.

Yes, their unnaturally small size can lead to health problems. Plus, they are poorly bred and their breeders do not have any genetic testing done before breeding. And one more thing: mutts are not healthier than well bred purebreds. When mixing breeds, there is even a chance of the offspring receiving hereditary problems from both sides. Ethical breeders do not breed mutts. Ethical breeders do not breed "teacups". Save up some money to store in case of emergencies. I knew someone with a "teacup" Pomeranian. He actually turned to be rather large and died at 5. Please do your research next time and if you still want to go the breeder route, contact a breed club for referral.
