My mom had a PET scan done and since they saw a shadow, they took out one of her lobes of her right lung. They confirmed it was malignant. As we speak she is in the hospital in ICU trying to regain some strength to be discharged. Has anyone known anyone or themselves who has survived? They havent staged her cancer yet, so the doctors dont have a prognosis for us at this time, I am looking for anyone who has been through this or known someone thanks!

my dad had the top lobe of his left lung removed about 4 yrs ago. still going strong. the post op pain is something else though. it took my dad about a 1 1/2 yr to get back to where he was. many people never lose the pain from the surgery completely. he never told me what stage it was.
my bro lost an entire lung to it about 2 yrs ago. also still around though a bit slower due to the decreased lung capacity.
this can be beat. think positive and wait for the docs.

With respect, I would suggest that your question is a little premature. Many people have survived excision of a lobe or even a complete lung. However, until you know what stage the cancer is at, it is not possible to provide a prognosis. Everyone who has had cancer of the lung has been to the stage where your mother is. It depends on whether there has been any metastasis, which is what the diagnosis of the stage of the cancer is all about. It seems, from the way that you write of this subject, that you are aware of the stages, so I shall not describe them here.
In conclusion, may I suggest that you consult the oncologist or pathologist, to determine when the tests will be done, and when you might be made aware of the results.

I think it's a little early to give you an answer on your Mom's chances of survival.
Surgery is usually a sign of early lung cancer. People with early disease have higher chances of longer term survival.
