I'm reading alot of essays about the definition of a family in this reader for my college english class, and it many definitions of a family I didn't think should be there.
How is it you define a family? Can two homosexuals have adopted children and be a family? Lesbians? two people cohabiting, unmarried? What is a family???
I have to write an essay on this, and when these people are giving all their statistics, about how marriage is no longer the norm, or is no longer needed, or that it is ok for homosexuals to be married, how do I defend this?
Right now, I can see my only defense being "because the Bible says it shouldn't be that way." but I want to produce some actual facts like the opposition is. What are some things I can use to prove a family should be a man and a woman, and their children, and that's it.??

Family is a very fluid concept. In some places it does mean 1 man, 1 woman and some kids. In other places it means an entire village. An interesting case in point that christians consider a family to be everyone who is a christian (family of god). I am not sure that the bible does give the western standard of 1 man, 1 woman and some children (although I could be wrong).
I would personally say that a family is 1 or more adults who share a common goal in the raising of children.
To all the people who are fixed on the idea of 1 mum, 1 dad and some kids, shame on you for excluding their grandparents!

A Christian would define a Family by examples found in Sacred Scripture....which would exclude same sex marriage, etc.
You could also research some very recent studies showing that children are actually better adjusted when raised by a mother and a father.
Remember, the Bible also tells us there will come a time when people will call what is good, bad...and what is bad will be called good. We have entered that time.

Pure & simple:
One husband, one wife, and one or more children equals a family.
Don't let the deceived people of this world confuse you. A family is what it has always been up until the gays came out of the closet with their perverted lifestyle. Now, they are trying to cram it down the throats of everyone.
The family is the first human organization, having at its head--the husband.
Webster's Elementary Dictionary Copyright 1980 by Merriam-Webster Inc. gives this definition for family: 4: A social group made up of parents and their children.
The same dictionary defines parent as:1: a father or mother of a child.
Are we going to allow the perverts to redefine, in order to support their perversion, words that have stood for centuries? I say it's time to fight for the Godly heritage that has made America great. Otherwise we are down the tubes, under God's judgment!

Christians do not believe that a family cannot be something other than one man, one woman, and their children.
Let's put aside the question of same sex couples for the moment.
Suppose an uncle adopts his dead sister's orphaned children and raises them single-handedly? Or the oldest child raises his or her younger siblings when their parents are killed? Or grandparents raise their grandchildren? There are an infinite number of living circumstances that are not one man/one woman/children -- but that many or most Christians would agree are a family.

I see a True Family as one that not only does not deny the truth, but accepts it. This family would also look past the clouds, and not even see them. It is these clouds which make people blind by staring at them for such a long time, and seeing images in them that just turn out to be clouds.
For instance, I saw a cloud which looked like an Aviator and his plane, but then it broke up and I realized that sometimes clouds just resemble things which we already see in our minds.

If you want to offer any facts then start with the fact that the bible is true. I mean if that is where we get our answers on how to live then shouldn't we work on proving the bible first? There are several websites that could help you get started with that, my favorite is drdino.com . After you can offer facts about the bible being real then will make more sense for you to say the "the bible says it"

The Bible says it like this:
"A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his own wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
"And Adam knew Eve, and she conceived and bore a child."
THAT is the BIBLICAL definition of a family.
If you want some OTHER definition, I can't help you there.
If you look at evolution to an answer, same-sex marriages would never occur because it doesn't aid in the propogation of the species.

a family is a man and a woman and at least one common child, if the man/woman/child dies or runs away the remaining are still called a family unless there is only one left.
a group of people living together can not be called a family.

Children need a constant positive male role model and a constant positive female role model to become well-adjusted adults.
That is why the ideal family should have both a mother and a father.

A Disciple of Christ strictly follows the teachings of Jesus, and Jesus said, these are my brothers and sisters, and mother, they are they which hear My Words and do them.
Notice Jesus did not say a thing about fathers,
Whosoever answers this question I challenge you to tell us why, Jesus doesn't mention fathers in this quote ?
On the issue of marriage, Jesus said "you do err, for there are marriages or giving of marriage in heaven. Jesus also said "thy will be done on eartth as it is in heaven.
Finally, Jesus said, we are not to make oathes (vows) to God
a marriage vow is an oath to God, fof God said, What I have joined to gether let no man put asunder. Have you ever heard of a soul mate.
