You car probably has 'shorty' headers factory equipped. A change in air intake and exhaust will yeild so little hp gain you won't even notice below 4000 rpm. You have to realize that the days of backyard hot rodders changing intakes, carburators, headers and cams and acheiving huge leaps in hp in a weekend are long gone. The engineers at Ford have squeezed the optimum amount of usable hp from all their engines that can be logically used in everyday transportation and still meet emissions standards and remain reliable. Unless you are willing to invest some serious money into you Mustang you will probably be better off leaving the engine stock.

The V6 can make good power if you do your research and spend wisely. If you're looking to make it faster and feel stronger I would get a traction lock rear end from a Mustang GT (not the whole rear end just the gear carrier) and have it installed with some 3.73 or 4.10 gears depending on whether you've got an automatic or manual transmission. The change to a lower gear will give your car noticeably better acceleration and while you will not have improved the power any it will feel much stronger. As long as you're tearing it apart though spend a little extra and convert it to a traction lock while you're at it.

If your car is an automatic you may look into changing over to a stick. It's not that bad if you can do the work yourself and the difference was night and day on my 5.0. If it is an automatic and you want to keep it that way look into a shift kit and torque converter. The factory automatic transmission is not a very good performance trans but it can be made to work well.

As for the engine the skies the limit depending on how much money you want to spend. CAI and headers will add some power but don't expect to notice huge gains.

My advice is if you want to get the biggest noticeable improvement for the least amount of money nothing is going to do more then changing the rear end gears. Good luck.

You can get a lot of power out of a 6 cyl engine. It is your car, get what you want and can afford for it. The CAI will make some difference in the noise level, you should be able to hear the engine suckng air. Do a search on the headers and see what pops up. Try other mustang sites like stangsunleashed.com

Good luck with it.
