I'm sorry to bring attention to this again, but I have to say, if the parents weren't from a specific religious belief, this never would have happened.

What are your thoughts?

no, nor has there ever been a non religious person believing that they can speak in tongues

if those parents were atheist, this would NOT have happened. i don't believe it said what religion they were, but to believe your kids are possessed by demons does imply a religion

edit: yogini has a point

How terrifying! Just the thought of it sickens me, physically. The possessed by demons thing sounds like a load of crap to me... maybe they were trying for some temporary insanity plea at first and then figured spray paint brain damage sounded so much more believable??? I mean.. WHAT?

Oh yea, and to answer your question, I'm pretty sure possession by demons or the devil is a religious term. I don't know that that makes these freaks religious, but if that's actually the case... then YES their belief in that crap surely assisted in leading to this tragedy!

Not that I have ever heard of. The only people who believe in possession like that are Christians or one's brought up in that type of household. I have never heard of any Religion outside of Mainstream that has claimed this. Come to think of it, I don't think I've heard of a Jew claiming this either.

We had a similar case in my area where a man kidnapped his daughter from his girlfriends house and killed her... claiming she was a "Child of Satan". He was not convicted of murder... "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity". Granted, it is this man who did these actions, it is this man who used a religious idea to justify killing this child (even if he truly believed the child was of Satan). If you read all of the testimony though, it sounds more like this man knew exactly what he was doing and was killing the child to be rid of a "problem" he didn't want responsibility for.

It sickens me. How these people go so long without someone noticing signs of this type of insanity, or see this man as a threat is beyond me.

That was just plain sinful and mean dude.I don't think that had anything to do with religion. The article said dude had been sniffing paint fumes.Hello! That ought to make you wonder if he wasn't hallucinating.Demon possession?Maybe.Stranger things have happened.I feel A 5-4 verdict should have been enough to convict him.Typical red tape getting in the way of justice. It's another sad example of the fallen sin cursed world we live in.

I know a non-religious person who believed that she herself was possessed, but the entity in question was some sort of spirit, not specifically a demon. (Although it threatened to do some very nasty things to her, include kill her. I witnessed several of the episodes.) She was absolutely convinced that it was a possession.

You and I know this guy was delusional, but I wonder how all the Christians know that he wasn’t correct (that his children really were possessed). I mean, they believe that a snake talked to Eve; a bush talked to Moses. Could it be that they know (subconsciously) that supernatural things don’t really happen? I think so.
