Not even close to a luxury car any more then an Accord/Altima is. The 2001 isn't even that great of a Sonata, the new model is much better. I love Hyundai, but lets not get ahead of ourselves here, a fully loaded Sonata with V6 is luxurious, but still not a luxury car. The Azera however is a luxury car with more features then the Sonata, a larger interior/exterior, more power and smoother ride for a very good price. The Azera compares favorably with the M35 Sedan, TL, Avalon/ES350 and other luxury cars. Hold the horses, in less then 1 year the Genesis RWD with optional V8 and cooled seats will be available to show you what true luxury is all about...so ahead and cancel your order for the RL/GS430/E430/535I etc.

During the year 2001 the XG300 was Hyundai's luxury car. The Sonata is considered as a full size car only with some luxury features.

I have 2 Hyundai cars... a 2003 and a 2007, both bought new.... while it my understanding the old ones were junk (keep in mind the old Toyota's were junk also) the new ones are great. I like mine, have no problems with the 2007, minor one with the 2003.... nothing different than I would expect from any brand of car. I have not checked the 2007 but my 2003 is worth more that my so called American made car at the same age... paid more for my American made car. People put well over 100,000 miles on these cars so they are not junk as some say. I would buy my same cars again and the next time I buy a new car it will be 99% chance to be another Hyundai.

I just had a 2007 Sonata as a loaner car for a week . It is not as luxurious as the Santa Fe because some things like the radio and center console seem cheesy . The trunk does not have a spring assist . But it did handle well . In fact my wife's 2000 Chevy Malibu LS is more plush and comfortable .
The Hyundai Luxury Sedan is the Azzura ( But it might be a tad overpriced ?) .

No. A 2001 is not a luxury car. Just a mid-sized sedan.

The older ones aren't. The 2006 and up are considered luxury cars.
