It is very possible that it is conducting seismic research. This is very common for helicopters to drop a basket looking device, and measure seismic waves. They will sometimes be hired by oil companies. They use the seismic activity to look for oil/natural gas.

RE:
Whats the low flying red helicopter doing?
The helicopter has a line hanging from the bottom as if it picking up something but I keep seeing it drop things into various fields around my house. It is not very far from the power lines. This is extremely unusual in my area and I can't get close enough to see what there dropping. any ideas?

Just now there was a low flying helicopter circling near my house. It had a long rope or cable hanging down, approximately 20 ft long, and at the end of the line it looked like about a 6 to 8 foot length of round objects, spaced about 1 ft apart. It looked similar to an abacas but was vertical. It was flying so that the end of this line was just above the tree tops. Anyone know what they re doing?

It's probably owned and operated by the power company that runs the local high-voltage lines. They're probably planning maintenance on the live cables and are dropping materials into position at the moment.
You'll probably get to see them use the chopper to hang a guy by the lines to work on them while they're still live.

Sounds like a fire dept. chopper that picks up water with that thing hanging and drops it on a fire.
