The vaccine is against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) that causes genital warts and may lead to cervical cancer.

It is estimated that 75% of sexually active adults will have HPV at some stage of their life.

Because of this, it is pointless administering the vaccine once someone has become sexually active.

It is generally recommended for girls in their early teens, having reached adolescence and hopefully not yet sexually active.

Once you have had the vaccine, you cannot get the strain of HVP that leads to cervical cancer (theoretically) but you should still have pap smears every 2 years once you become sexually active just to be sure!

You are supposed get the vaccine before you are sexually active. There is no hard age limit, rather it is more and more pointless to get the vaccine the more sexual partners you have.
