If you want to have a fire at the beach, they are allowed at these beaches, which have designated fire pits:

Mother’s Beach (Marina Del Rey)
Dockweiler
Cabrillo
Bolsa Chica
Huntington State Beach
Corona Del Mar

Of these, Bolsa Chica is my favorite. Note that there is no camping at any of the above beaches.

Places like Leo Carillo, Doheny, and San Onofre don’t count in my book because you have to book a campsite, and you aren’t really on the beach (except for Doheney Beachfront sites.

FYI - for the OC beaches - in addition to the fire pits (which are hard to come by on weekends - I learned last weekend that you have to get there in the early morning to get one), the OC lifeguards will not hassle you using a standalone barbeque (like a Weber) if you:
keep water handy and obvious
have the BBQ on a stand or dig a pit under it so that the sand does not get hot, and....
appear to be using it in a safe and secure fashion.
don't try burying the coals - dispose of them in the designated disposal bin.

(There were a ton of people using Webers at CdM beach last weekend - so I stopped one of the lifeguards and asked)

Since you are much more likely in Santa Monica to hit an LA County beach, you may want to call the lifeguard station and ask.......

PS... Obviousman, since I know you get asked for this beach list over and over again (and you are always so gracious to post it again without being annoyed), you may want to add Balboa to your list of beaches with fire pits.......

Try bolsa chica beach, it's not too far from Santa Monica. They have fire pits and I've seen people bring their own barbecues. But, if you're going to do this, you have to get there super duper early to reserve a fire pit.

Huntington Beach allows bbq, they even have some pits, though you have to show up early to reserve a spot, they go pretty fast on the weeknds. My friend had a bday party there and it was great.
