I did a search on here before posting, and all the other topics deal with work, marriage...grown up ways to deal with stress.

Can anyone suggest some ideas for children under stress, like while at school?

Throw them in your car and head up for a weekend on the farm. BBQ under the stars and the horses to entertain them. Seriously, I would love to meet you, but that is not helping now. Children are like adults when they are troubled. They want to be validated. I know you make special time for your children from your posts, but if one child is needing a little extra attention from you or Dad, by all means, do it. That is not spoiling. My kids are grown now, and the three of them were having the age old debate about who was Mom's favorite. When the teasing stopped, my oldest daughter said Mom's favorite is whoever needs her the most at the time. Sometimes just validating their right to feel negative is a break through. Then you have a common ground from which to explain why we don't act on all of our feelings, but you can't get there without acknowledging their feelings.

Hey Quella
Hmm I am inclined to be careful while asking this cause I don't know if your a parent or teacher. But "inclined to be careful" is about it...here it goes...if you are a teacher and I offend you I'm sorry.

Kids need to move. Kids get stressed at school because they are told to sit still for ungodly amounts of time and listen and learn. All the while the teacher gets to move freely around the room and talk. Recess is taken out of the day more and more these days.
Anyway there are some great programs that work on movement in the classroom. "How Does your Engine Run" is a good one that teaches kids to learn to understand thier own body and the need for something to either calm them or alert them. Its great because its little things that can be done in 2-3 minute incriments a few times a day that make a big difference. "Brain Gym" is another one.
On a last note I would like to add some kids just don't do well with certain teachers. Not that the teacher is bad but the structure of the class doesn't work well with the kid and makes him very stressed out. I had a few that we tried thinng like Brain Gym and the kid was still highly stressed and finally the recoomendation was to try a different teacher and it made a big difference. One kid in particular had a hard time with a teacher who had a high pitched voice and a fast moving class did very poorly yet did 100% better when he was switched to a class that had a male teacher with a mellow structure.

I am appalled at the answer who said "psycological counseling" as maybe he hasn't been in many elementry classes lately. Some are very stressful as districts push testing due to NCLB and teachers are flying off the wall worried about thier jobs in thier kids don't pass test. Recess is cut and instruction time is 3 hour math blocks and then 3 hours or literature blocks. School is very stressful these days.

Children do not need stress management. They need counseling on psychology. Stress management is applicable only in an office and relates to grown upssssssssssssss.....It is much more comprehensive to the grown up. It is mainly applicable in offices and causes due to some persons who behave as 'dictator(s)'.

Depends on if there is a particular stressor or not. Kids that experience trauma such as a natural disaster can benefit from art therapy, in particular.

For the stressors of life in general, a structured and predictable routine, lot's exercise away from TV and playstation, reasonably healthy diet, and lots of laughter are the best thing around.

The stock answer of thinking of something else doesn't work that well with kids. Perhaps if you had them sit down and write what they feel and why they feel less than others. May allow them to find their own answers. Then you can re-enforce them with your gained knowledge. Or, have them write down all their negative traits... then show them how to crumple them up and put them into the garbage where, they belong..Lots of little tricks to re-direct their thinking. But do make them think!!

If not yoga then look into martial arts. Be sure to investigate to find out if they stress meditation and relaxation as part of the program.

Stress is a result of resisting what is.... so it's just a matter of accepting what is.
