He was in his place of burial for the better part of three days. Jesus was dead and was incapable of doing anything. (Ecclesiastes 9:5) He had to physically die in order that all imperfect humans might have the opportunity to live forever. In this way, he bought back for mankind what Adam & Eve lost for us.
The paradise that Jesus spoke of is the paradise that will one day soon encompass the whole earth. The thief will be resurrected at God's appointed time and be given the chance to prove himself faithful during the 1,000 year of Jesus' ruler-ship as King. Just as Jesus himself was resurrected back to life by his Father, the Son of God has been given the authority to resurrect the billions who have fallen asleep in death.

Paradise, if you study was for lack of a better term, a holding place. The rich man and Lazerath remember that, the rich man died, and lifted his eyes in hell, and could see Lazerath who also died, but was in the "bosom of Abraham" Paradise, was where those who had faith, received rest until the time of the Crucifixion. Jesus "descended" during those days where he preached to those there the way of salvation, on the third day he rose. It is my understanding, paradise no longer exist, I base this on Paul's scripture stating that to be absent for life is to be in the presence of the Lord. Hope this helps.

Jesus was simply dead. Ecclesiastes 9: 5-6 5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.
So when Jesus died he no longer had any conscious or thoughts, he was dead

Jesus went down into hell and reclaimed the keys (took authority over it) and rose again to prove that He defeated death, hell and the grave. Paradise is Abraham's Bosom.

1 Peter 19
"He preached unto the spirits in prison". Good people that were held .. before the resurrection. Not hell... prison. He probably had to gather the lost souls that were not saved by his resurrection.

The whole "descended into hell for three days" was borrowed (along with other elements) from the mystery religions (Tammuz, Orpheus, Osirus, Attis, Adonis, etc.)
The "dying and resurrected" gods of those religions represented agriculture. The god "dies" during the harvest and stays dead through the winter. In the spring the seed is planted. Therefore the god is in the underworld for three days, then he is "reborn" when the seed germinates.
