i want to make a yellow cake from scratch, but i don't have milk, can i use water instead or will it mess up the cake.

You need to use milk; you won't be happy with the result if you use water. Make a trip to the store.

I've used all types of different (drinking) liquids and never been unhappy with the results... ginger ale, 7-up, fruit juices. I've also added complimentary spices and/or nuts, dried fruits to "pop" the cake some. Have Fun!

i have been cooking for thirty five years and never heard of a cake you put milk into unless you are making aTres Leche Cake , water always goes into home made and boxed mix cakes

sorry you need the milk unless you have milk powder.
