Religion. In an attempt to find answers and meaning in life, we created religion. We also like the idea that someone is in control of situations and that we have a purpose in life. So we invented god "in our image". Originally, god might have been a stone statue or the elements of nature. As man evolved, he was able to conceive of a spiritual entity. Eastern religions tend to make god a "force" of nature. Western religions have painted god as a human being with lots of power. We have given god human attributes such as a jealous or envious nature. He gets angry. But he is supposedly a god of love.

According to a lot of ancient myths the gods came down from the sky and ruled men for a time and taught men many things. Then they apparently went away.

Considering the vast number of myths like this, and that these myths existed in cultures that apparently had no contact with each other, (such Incas in South America & the Babylonians in the middle east), there seems to be the possibility that "something" may have actually come down from the sky and ruled over humans for a period of time.

Some people have theorized that these beings may have been an extraterrestrial race that colonized Earth and then ended up leaving again for one reason or another. A lot of the same cultures have myths about "wars in the heavens", so they may have had to leave because of some sort of war that broke out between different factions of the aliens.

Apparently, when these beings left, humans kept trying to serve them. Lacking the actual "gods" themselves, the humans created statues and served those, hoping that, by this, they could still somehow receive blessings from the powerful beings who used to rule them.

If there is any truth to this idea then
1.) First came aliens
2.) Then came the idea that the aliens were gods
3.) Then came religion

This idea may be fairly far-fetched, but I wanted to give an answer that hadn't already been given 10 times by other people.

Well, if you believe in the Judeo-Christian god, then of course, your answer would be God. However, given that most early religions had multiple deities and/or worshiped nature/spirits, it could be argued that religion came first and eventually, though time, evolved into the worship of one god. I'd guess that worship of the supernatural (religion) came first, then worship of god(s).

Religion created the thing called GOD. Whatever God being or all powerful being is out there was around first, but the God that you and I know is a human creation, just like the Bible is a human creation.

God, being the alpha and omega, of course came first before religion. Without God, there is no religion. But having God in your heart isn't a religion. Following Him isn't a religion. Reading the Bible isn't a religion. Having God is a relationship with Him, not a religion. So, in God, religion is nothing. Relationship is everything.

The Son of God returned to Earth in the form of an egg. How to get from one side to the other remains a mystery. For the egg wanted to make the crossing of the road to reach the other side. Being an egg it was not an easy task in a physical material world. Loop-sided and bent on purpose, having returned to make the crossing through time and space, the egg wandered aimlessly onto the road. Just a little more then half way across, an 18 wheeler happened upon the scene and egg was instantly scrambled! Thus the FIRST middle of the road church was established for all chickens everywhere.

Religion came first, it was created by primitive man along with this silly idea of god creating the universe.
Primitive man was ignorant to his surroundings which is why he came up with this foolish idea of god being responsible for why things happen the way they do.

God was first. because he was always exhisting. of course, we don't know how. that's not for us to know. Religion only existed after God created us. because, if Religion came first, then wat's the religion about? how was the religion made?
