In many non-Catholic denominations priests are expected to live by example: get married, lead a good life, have children, etc.

Originally being celibate was a choice that many priests did not choose.

The enforced celibacy started first by priest being allowed to marry but not being allowed to make love to their wives, then marriage was banned all together.

It was a political move by the Pope to keep rich priest's children from inheriting their father's land. It made the Catholic church very rich.

Dear Jenae,

No where in the Bible does it teach that priests are to be celibate and not be married. In fact God says it's not good for a man to be alone.

i think that priests being prohibited from getting married- is a man made rule (practiced mainly by Catholics) which i think in some ways contribute to some of the sexual scandals surrounding the Catholic church. Sexuality should not be repressed but it should be practiced in a proper context.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

Priest's not "being allowed to marry" is not a Bible teaching.

1 Tim 4: 1-3 "4 However, the inspired utterance says definitely that in later periods of time SOME WILL FALL AWAY FROM THE FAITH, paying attention to MISLEADING inspired utterances and TEACHINGS of demons, by the HYPOCRISY of men who speak lies, marked in their conscience as with a branding iron; FORBIDDING TO MARRY, commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be partaken of with thanksgiving by those who have faith and accurately know the truth. The reason for this is that every creation of God is fine, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is sanctified through God’s word and prayer over [it]."

Masturbation is considered a sin by Catholics, so technically not.

However, any Catholic priest in private will tell a 12 or so year old boy that it is normal and probably admit that they have done it recently, felt bad for it, and confessed quickly.

___

Why do so many people seem to think that the question involved their opinions on priests marrying?

haha good question! Actually, if priests were to actually read the bible, they would notice that 1 timothy 3:12 says '''''Let ministerial servants be husbands of one wife, presiding in a fine manner over children and their own households.'''''
No where in the bible does it say that a priest or a minister has to be single! They can even have kids!

Greek Orthodox priests can marry, and their wives hold a position of respect within the Church.

There is only one High Priest Jesus Christ and all believers are his preists and there is a passage that states how man was not meant to be alone.

CJ: Some Catholics are saved, you can't make a statement like that without knowing their heart. Some believe in faith alone and Christ alone and don't even know the research of the church. Most don't open a bible, but I have heard the gospel given in the Catholic church before. Anyhow it's just not doing any good to say that which you keep on saying day after day about them as it is certainly not drawing anyone closer to the truth just makes you look intollerable and all knowing- which you are not. Only God is. Let's remember to be kind to one another and to love as Christ loved ALL of us.
