So? Fill out the W-4 then.

They are supposed to get the W-4, and if they don't they withhold based on single filing status and zero allowances.

Just fill it out and get your check. It is not worth fighting about. Since you did work for them, they are required to get your SSN.

Here is the W-4 for you to print out, fill in, and give to them. Fill in your name, address, SSN, check "single" for filing status, put "0" in line 5, sign it, date it, and you are done.

Your filing status and allowances are irrelevant for one day's pay.

They're either lying to you or they don't know any better. If you don't file a W-4 with them they simply must withhold tax as if you had filed one claiming Single and zero withholding allowances.

They are busting you, because they feel you busted them. Technically they are right. They are required to have a w-2 for all workers, and they need your social security number. They could claim you as casual labor and bypass all this, but they are punishing you for walking out on them.
