Tell your husband congrats, I'm a fellow 2E2 in the Air Force. Yes you can go with him, however, two things: 1) he will not be able to move out of the dorms until after he is in 2nd phase (normally 30 days into his school), and 2) there may not be enough housing there right now. I was at Keesler during Katrina, and a lot of the homes didn't get destroyed, but had water damage and what not. I am not sure of how bad the waiting list is for housing right now, however, I'm sure if you called, or even had your husbands recruiters call the housing office at Keesler and ask them about it they could tell you or him how long if any the wait is. (They would probably be more apt to talk to the recruiter since your husband is still at Basic right now..) I do know that the price of living (off-base) is outrageous since the Hurricane some 2 bdrm apts are going for over $1000/mth for rent... Good luck, and if he or you ever have any questions about the schooling, I've been there and done that!

I believe it means 72 school days, not including the weekends. I know that 72 days seems like a really long time but it goes by quickly, I promise. I've been through it as well. My husband went to Sheppard for tech school. It is based on what phase he is in, and how well the squadron is doing. If someone else screws up, the whole squadron could lose weekend duties. I'm guessing that you don't have a military id which is what you really need to get so you can get on base. If not, it really isn't a big deal since he can get you a limited pass. I went to see my husband and he was in phase 3...it really isn't what you expect. If you are staying in a hotel, he cannot stay the night with you, so you are limited on what you can do. You can't go into their dorms either.

I am not sure how much housing is available on the base. I know they have been working hard to get a lot rebuilt. The construction on the coast is basicly nonstop. If you are unable to live on the base, there are other housing options available with more and more coming up daily.

The recruiter or your husbands CO should be able to help you out in this and get you the needed information.

Yes, you can go with your husband when the tech school is longer than 6 months.

However:

If housing is short in the local area, then it's also more expensive. If housing is expensive, I can practically guarantee you the waiting list for base housing will be longer than 6 months.

Check how much weight the government will move. Weight limits vary depending on rank. An Airman Basic with a family isn't exactly a rarity, but most people of that rank are single and weight limits for airman are probably lower than weight limits for NCOs. Anything over the weight limit, you have to pay out of pocket. (A DITY move is usually the best option for an airman if you do decide to move).

Pay particular attention to what the government is paying you. Tech school staff assume students will only be there a few weeks and that they'll be unaccompanied. Your husband gets Family Separation Allowance when he's assigned somewhere unaccompanied by his family. Finance folks used to short tech schools won't bother to change FSA if the spouse is just visiting (a couple weeks, a month, etc). If they're not paying attention to how long your husband is going to be there and don't stop FSA when you come, you could wind up having to pay back that money later.

If you do move out with him and do run into problems, keep in mind the Air Force is usually more than fair, once you work your way through the practically endless bureacracy.

Personal experience: Government estimated it would cost me $800 to move 2800 pounds when my wife moved out during my tech school. Actual weight moved was 2825 pounds and the actual cost was $1600. After months of complaining (during which time I didn't have to pay, by the way), one of the finance folks noticed I'd been getting FSA the whole time my wife was living with me. I had to pay that back over a couple paychecks. I was already done with a year-long tech school and assigned to my first duty station when the issue was finally resolved. I had been trying to reach a compromise where I only paid $1200. The Air Force eventually decided an A1C with a family could only afford to pay $110, but I had to pay it out of one paycheck.

You're going to run into problems if you move out there. It takes a lot of patience and persistence to get them resolved and you'd better not let them get you down if they occur.

Military life: It's an adventure.

he won't know until he gets there whether or not you can be brought there at government expense or if there will be any possibility of getting base housing. accessibility to base housing is dependent on his paygrade, the number of bedrooms he is entitled to and how many units are available.

generally speaking , School must be at least 6 months long before Accompanied Orders will be cut. Five months and 29 days , they will be unaccompanied Orders.
