lol - my mother walked into my house one time years ago and asked very loudly "when did you become jewish?!?!" after seeing my large wooden pentacle on my wall LOL
most people think it's the sign of the devil though
earth, air, fire, water, spirit
edit: the other posters are correct. it has meant different things to different groups in different times, just like the swastika

i'm not sure where the '5 elements' meaning came from, and it's legitimate if that's how you view the elements, but i don't buy it. [i hold spirit outside of and above the material realm of the elements.] the pentacle is much more significant than that.
nature uses 'phi' [1.618...] a lot. phi is the basis of the golden mean, which appears all over the universe. plants use it, the joints from our fingertips to elbows use it, in art it is considered the most beautiful proportion by many, and it is intimately tied to the pentacle. the number 5 plays a prominent role in the golden mean mathematically, and the lines of the pentacle itself are proportioned to the golden mean.
also, the planet venus traces a pentacle as it moves in the sky, which ties it to the ideal of femininity.
long story short... the pentacle is the geometric form of life itself. it is the feminine energy of creation and the physical form of all creatures neatly expressed in one simple symbol. it is an abstraction of the human body, thru which we are able to comprehend the universe.

As a Pagan, yes I do know. *Wink* I know what you mean by people either thinking it a Star of David or they symbol of Satan. Thankfully I work with people who are more curious than anything and just ask what it is and what it means... but I have had some newcomers to work who just assume I'm Jewish or that I'm part of some Satanic Cult based on their limited knowledge of these things. But I haven't worn one in a while, so I haven't had to answer any questions like that lately lol

four points represent north, south, east and west. Also Fire, Water, Earth and Air. The fifth point is Spirit. And the star as a whole represents man within a complete circle ,representing the continuation of being.

The four elements, Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. The fifth point is the God and Goddess, together. It represents unity and interconnectivity between all of above mentioned.

It's represented several things in it's history.
The Christians even used it at one time to represent the five wounds on Christ. Right side up it represents the Goddess, upside down it represents the horned god, NOT Satan.
In modern witch craft it also shows the five elemements. It's context depends on the meaning.

The five pointed star is a common geometric shape.
Many different sciences have used it.
It is a metaphor for MANY things.
Many different cultures have embraced it as their symbol.
ADD: It is, also, a 2-dimensional representation of a pyramid and everything that that represents.
ADD ADD: One of my favorite meanings is the 5 states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, energy
