I'm originally from Virginia and actually have a friend stationed there. As far as theme parks, Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion are both pretty close by. I love Williamsburg and Jamestown, which are also close by. The history of the area is interesting. It's been a while since I've been to Norfolk, so I'm not sure about the community. I've never been to Japan, so I can't comment on what it would be like there.

For a Navy family Norfolk is fine as are most duty stations. The Japanese culture can be a problem for some. Single sailors should stay away from Norfolk.

I'd go for San Diego if given a choice.

with three kids, the chance of getting Command sponsorship goes down, especially for Yokosuka if the kids are school aged. the schools are overcrowded there and large families don;t always get SOFA status.

CONUS locations are better.. San Diego or Hampton Roads most likely, especially as just about any rating can be stationed at either location.

Go to Japan if you have the choice because you will probably eventually end up in Norfolk.

Japan is great, DOD schools for the kids through. but it will be something they will never forget depending on their age. MWR has all sorts of things for the family to do.
