I could use some pointers for taking photos pf people please. I have always only taken photos of children...happy beautiful photos but now I am in Romania with a huge Gypsy community here. I see such despair and brokeness in them, most are beggers from age 4 to 70 or even 80...I would like some tips in shooting their photos to capture the despair....

Asking the people is NOT an option...They are true gypisies and not only do we not speak the same language they are known for scams begging and stealing and would either tell me I owed them money, tell me I would get some sort of blessing or curse if I didn't give them money or outright steal it later on.... If you are not familier with European Gypsies you cannot undserstand..

Personally, I would use black and white but don't rule out color either. I would use a digital so you have the option for both. Shoot from a kneeling level for some reason that way seems to look better... I would also take more than one photo but stay out of view you don't want to offend someone or have the asking for money because you took their picture. Also remember that out of a roll not ever picture is going to be a winner..if you get 2 as an armatures consider yourself lucky.... enjoy what an opportunity for photography

Do not do what Pobept K and YoooHoooo say!

Be open with these people, tell them that you want to take their photos. Get to know them and spend some time with them.

Do not hide your camera or stay out of sight. You will not be appreciated if you do that and could get hurt. And you probably will not get good photos anyway.

Let them know you are interested in them and their situation. Offer to give them photos and let them pick what they want. If you make any money from the photos, share it with them.

This sounds like a long term project. Are you ready to spend more time with them? If you expect to just drop in, take some photos and leave, then I would suggest maybe you do something else.

You can get some good pics in color, but B/W will really make it come through. Look up photojournalism style shooting and learn that. That's who you'll be able to capture the "moment" without altering it or staging it making it look fake.
If you don't have one, get a telephoto zoom lens to keep your distance so you can shoot without disrupting or interferrgin with what you want to capture.

I like to shoot in black and white, as I think it removes all the distractions. Sounds like a great way to capture the sentiment you are looking to capture. Also, candid shots taken very close are always poignant (use your zoom).

1. don't pose them for the shots.
2. take many many many photo's, never know when one will be just right for a project.
3. keep your camera out of sight, make your photo's as intrusive as possible

Unlike some posters advice, I don't care for black & white, but, that dose not mean they are sometimes very effective photographs.
good luck

The late Robert Capa, photojournalist and combat photographer, when asked how he photographed people, replied: "You have to like people - and let them know it."

Read the biography of Dorothea Lange who photographed people in abject poverty during the depression. She, like Capa, took time to get to know the people they photographed before they photographed them.
