I cycle between 8-10 miles a day, 5 days a week. I was wondering if anyone knows roughly how many calories this would burn, or if there is a way to measure how many calories you burn cycling?

thanks :)

Here is a web site, just enter the info and then find the activity.
http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/jumpsite/calculat.htm

edit:
igamogam a rough estimate is better than none at all. And being close is better than spending $ on a lab test.

MTBIKR offered a good general info site. It's excellent for comparison too. You don't need precise info anyway. Looking at the data offered, you can see what activities and efforts can help you best in your goals.

Note how different easy to hard efforts affect you calories burned. Crusing on a bike with little effort doesn't take much energy while very hard efforts burn a ton.

It is pretty near to impossible to work out accurately how many k/cal you burn outside of a lab.

Variables include:
Body-mass
Height
Age
Gender
Fitness
Incline (is it a flat ride)
Aerodynamics
Wind conditions
Ambient Temperature
Altitude
Weight of bike
etc. etc...

They are just the ones I can think of quickly

The site suggested previously will only give you a rough guide.

It's best to just ride as much as you can!

Estimate the distance you cover during your ride (which it seems you've already done).
Then factor in your current weight.
(What you're doing is estimating your overall effort).

For light effort (<12 mph) : burn 0.226 calories/lb/mile
Moderate effort (12-14 mph) : burn 0.259 calories/lb/mile
Vigorous effort (14-16 mph) : burn 0.284 calories/lb/mile
Hard effort (16-19 mph) : burn 0.300 calories/lb/mile
"Racing" effort (20+ mph) : burn 0.363 calories/lb/mile

For example:
120 lb rider - 1 hour - 5 miles = 136 calories
120 lb rider - 1 hour - 10 miles = 271 calories
120 lb rider - 1 hour - 15 miles = 511 calories

150 lb rider - 1 hour - 5 miles = 169 calories
150 lb rider - 1 hour - 10 miles = 339 calories
150 lb rider - 1 hour - 15 miles = 639 calories

190 lb rider - 1 hour - 5 miles = 214 calories
190 lb rider - 1 hour - 10 miles = 429 calories
190 lb rider - 1 hour - 15 miles = 809 calories

I would recommend getting a cycle-computer that can estimate this for you. Wal-Mart sells one made by Bell for about $20.00. You input your bike information and your weight and as you ride it can give you your estimate.
