Assuming I want to put 4 lights in (1 in each corner), how far from the walls should it be?

Before you cut the holes, make sure you have the cans located correctly. 1) make sure the cans fall between studs. They don't have to be centered between studs, but they can't fall on a stud. 2) Make sure the can isn't near an a/c duct as this may prevent installion directly below the duct. 3) Make sure your cans are at least 3 feet away from the edge of your ceiling fan blades (I made this mistake and ended up with a stroboscopic effect when the fan and lights were on together). 4) Go into your attic and make sure that there is enough space between the ceiling and the bottom of the roof deck where you want to put the can, and make sure you can get your body in the part of the attic where you'll be working with the can. 5) The cans should be symmetrically located in the room. 6) This is a free tip based on my experience...use a keyhole saw to cut the holes and only cut on the upstroke, otherwise you'll have pieces of ceiling texture falling off. Hope this helps.
As far as the distance from the walls, it's really a matter of preference. The closer to the wall you get, the more pronounced the scalloped pattern on the wall from the light will be. If you don't want this, then install them at least 3 feet from the wall. Actually, once you eliminate all the places you shouldn't put the lights, they almost locate themselves.

My brother just did his living room and put the lights on slider tracks so that he can take the lights to anywhere he wishes and point them in any direction. Then he put a really neat wooden border all around the room to hide the mechanisms. It really looks elegant.
