I sometimes get compliments from people and I really don't know what to say in response. I don't want to seem rude. What is proper etiquette? Do you have to compliment them back? Do you just say thank you? I mean I am flattered by it of course, anyone would be, but I don't know how to react. I kind of feel uncomfortable because I have low self esteem and I feel like the person is lying. Haha. Sounds bad, but I just want some input. Thanks in advance.

thank you is all thats needed. And maybe the next time you see them you could compliment them too.
be honest though, don't compliment if your lying....make sure you really mean what your complimenting them on, otherwise they could feel the same way you do.

The last thing you want to do is deny the compliment. The second to the last thing that you want to do is say nothing or ignore it.

If someone compliments you, you just "wow, that's really nice of you to say. Thank you!" And smile. Leave it at that.

What do you even care if they are lying? So what? They verbalized a nice compliment. Thank them for it. Don't try to second guess people's intentions on unimportant matters. You'll never read their minds, and if they're lying they will never admit it. If they are telling the truth, as they probably are, then awesome for you.

The ONLY acceptable answer is a sincere smile and

"Why, thank you! You really made my day."

Whether you think you deserve it or not - a compliment is a gift and should be treated with great respect and gratitude.

Have trouble smiling? Practice until you can give a sincere-looking smile automatically. Yep stand in front of the mirror and smile. Have mirror clipped to the visor in your car and practice smiling when you're waiting in traffic.

trust me a truly sincere smile is the best - but if you feel you simply don't deserve the praise - a sincere-looking smile will have to do.

Thank you works wonderfully. Said with a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eyes.
