The best way to avoid dogs eating things dogs shouldn't eat is to roll up a newspaper, and wait for a dog to grab something it shouldn't. Then you turn to your hubby, whack him over the head, and say, "Bad Hubby! Don't leave stuff where the dogs can get it!" Of course, when you see him put things away, you must pat his head and say, "Good Hubby! Good boy!" then give him a cookie. Soon there will be no more unauthorized eating in the house.

You could try leaving some stuff around sprayed with Bitter Apple. Make sure what you are leaving around is not edible OR a toy belonging to the dog. This doesn't work on all dogs, but can work on some. Get the dog some Nylabones to encourage constructive chewing.

Ideally, don't leave stuff lying around. If it's at the dog's level, they consider it fair game.

But you can teach your dog the "leave it" command. Keep the dog leashed and when it goes for something it shouldn't, tell the dog "leave it" and give him a quick tug on the leash.

Of course "leave it" will only work if you're there to supervise. If your dog gets into things when you're not looking, consider crating him because next time it could be a household cleaner or poison that he gets into - that would be a whole lot worse than paper or socks.

Look for something called "bitter apple". My dog used to chew up EVERYTHING in sight. I had a hard time trusting her. Now she has to go in every room with me. Because she too get's anything on the floor. She even chewed the molding on the side of the walls. So what I did was left somethings out for her like cardboard and shoes that I didnt care for and I sprayed them with bitter apple. She would go to get what ever I layed out for her and spit it out b/c the taste was terrible I would firmly and loudly say "NO!" and I would offer her a toy she could chew on. Like a KONG with peanut butter stuffed in it. This is hard. I know how you feel. For a few weeks I had to be real hard on my beagle and give her a lot more eercise and I even kept a leash on her at all times she was not in her crate and kept it around my ankle. It really showed her, her bounderies and that i am always watching. But more exercise can be very helpful!

Good Luck and sorry about your chewing pup!

I agree with most advice given - just wanted to add that Bitter Apple is ineffective when dry, it's only successful as a deterrent when wet. Our trainer recommended squirting our dog in the mouth with Bitter Apple when chewing something or otherwise engaging in unwanted behaviour.

lol. Sounds like you have your hands full.

I would leave this stuff lying out, and have a rolled up newspaper. Temp him to get and when he goes after, Give him a tap with that paper and tell him no. It may not work over night but I have a black lab that I had to break and now when all I have to do is get the newspaper out, She lies down.

Good Luck

We are the smarter of the 2. It is our responsibility to keep the things that we don't want the dog to have picked up. They don't know the difference between their toys and our property. Make sure there are plenty of toys/chews around for your dog. If you do catch him chewing on something he is not suppose to be...remove it from him and tell him "no" in a firm voice. Then give him one of his toys that he can chew on.
My husband is the same way....doesn't understand.

i'm not an expert... but there are many websites offering free dog training information...

HOW TO GET A DOG TO STOP CHEWING might be one? DOG TRAINING might be anoher search.

my dogs always have a LOT of toys available. i buy hard bones for them in the pet department (Never rawhide) and miscellaneous toys. lots to choose from and perhaps if you offer the dog some of the flavored bones, he will opt for those instead of your things.

take care.

simply clean up after yourself. if there's nothing laying around for the dog to chew than nothing will get ruinned.. than you can buy a few chew toys for the pup.

Dog proof the house. If you don't want the dog to have it, it's your responsibility to make sure it's out of reach.
