My daughter is in the second grade and please don't flame me for saying this, but I am SICK AND TIRED of her school ALWAYS sending home notes that they want parents to give money for this, that,or the other. The other day she brought home a paper that the school wants new mats for their gym walls, and the school was asking parents for donations of $25.00 or more.

Now,I don't know about anyone else, but we live on a very tight budget and we can't give money constantly to every little thing because we do have bills to pay like everybody else. It wasn't enough that we had the school supply list from you-know-where,and now they are asking EVERY WEEK for money for something else?

I don't mind sending money for field trips or something like that, but when did all of us parents become a bank? We don't have any family to help us out with anything,so we live on a very tight budget like alot of other families do. How do you feel about this, please share your thoughts and feelings about this!

I also forgot to mention that her school DEMANDED that ALL OF THE PARENTS send $50.00 for their little school fee and we were only given one week to have it paid in full or else, nice huh?

My daughter's school doesn't elect a homecoming queen and king in each class, whomever raises the MOST MONEY,is the person who is selected as queen and king.

I sent alot of the stuff that the school is trying to get the kids to sell to people right back to her school, because the focus on schools should be on their education, not by how many magazines or candy that they can sell!

I completely agree! I have 3 in elementry and every time I turn around there is a note home for something going on. Some things I don't mind, like my son is in 1st grade and his teacher asked for $5.00 from each parent on this reading program that all 1st grade teachers thought was great but the school wouldn't fund. The teachers paid for it out of their pockets and I am sure they will not get all their money back. So that I didn't mind. And I am always making sure my kids have enough supplies, I collect shoe boxes and magazines because they can always use those. I collect box tops and Campbells soup labels. I donate snacks to their classes every few weeks. But geez!
The school was having a book fair which I personally think is a waste of money. If my kids need books I will buy them when I can afford it. My daughters teacher sends home a note "She wants to go to the book fair". What was I supposed to do then? Say no and look like the bad mom who doesn't support the school? So I gathered $3 and sent it in.
I am sure it will be something else next week!
You are not alone!

I agree when my oldest was little i was all into the fundraisers and then i got stuck with paying $75 worth of merchandise for someone who didn't pay . After that i said no more and then the prize they get are never what they show and i had sold over $500 for them. The focus should be on education so my younger children are not allowed. I donate school supplies and pay my kids fees, and we live on somewhat of a budget but i agree enough is enough. Back to school has become a season like CHRISTMAS, AND THE NEEDS ARE NEVER ENDING !My kids have attended Private school too and as yet i spent less there overall than in the public school. Great question!!

This is a delicate issue. I like my children to have enough money so they don't feel left out but not so much that they spend foolishly. Since you say that food and drinks are included, and they are not going out, and that there is no place to buy souvenirs, I would think only a minimal amount is necessary. For five days, £200 comes to £40 a day. I think this is far too much; maybe £10 a day would be about right. Even so, that's a lot of candy from the vending machines.

It can be diffcult. Especially when you have 2 in elementary, 1 in middle school, and 1 a senior in High School. Not counting the supplies, the fee we had to pay out for different things (labs, workbooks, planners, ect) was over $200. Then fund raisers on top of that - we just sent $20 with each child to take care of that. It is not easy. But we start in the summer months putting up for school fees and things so that we have it for the start of school. We know it is coming. It really helps that way you are not having to come up with a lump at once.

Someone mention something about private school. They are even worse with all the fees and wanting money for this and that. You pay for everything in private school. We removed the 3 youngest from private school this year due to the cost kept going up.

Okay, I don't have a children but I 'm a taxpayer , and this is the reason people should vote. Tax dollars in my area are being spent on day labor centers and war and people can barely afford to raise their families. I'm all for a person making a better life for themselves, but for non-tax payers to receive a tax funded day labor center is ridiculous. Why isn't that money being spent on the schools ? When you have school board officials and principals complaining about classroom conditions and lack of supplies. Just this past weekend I was out running errands, and was stopped 3 times by kids/adults asking for donations for all kinds of stuff. I suggest all parents start attending their local school board meetings and actually look to see who you vote for when school board elections come up. It does make a difference. They're receiving high salaries ,but you have to pay for something every week for you child now is that fair? The schools are over-crowded in some areas ,but it's the tax payers responsibility to fit the bill for non-taxpayers children?

I feel the same as you do the prices for school stuff is so outrageous these days. My nephew who is in first grade has to pay $90 book fees and all the school supplies he had to have came to $50 not including the shoes he had to have for gym ($20) because the pair we bought were not white on the bottom. And on top of that we spend $10 a week on lunch.

this doesnt even include field trip money. which this month is $15 to go to the zoo. my nephew has 1 trip a month.

If the school needs money for things then the school should pay for it not the kids.

we get school pics done at walmart because it is 50% cheaper.

Yeah I hear ya, My child is only in Sr.K we got a note from his teacher the other day to please send water to school for your child because they are no longer suppling water to the K. class,So now we have to start buying bottled water. I just send in the reccomended school supplies and as for pic. I get the class photo and then I go to Walmart because I can pose my own child and it's cheaper and they turn out better. I buy all his reading books from the dollar store and he is a member of the local library so I don't feel guilty about sending all the book fair order forms back emptey. Feild trips I don't mind as long as I know it's educational if not I would rather put the money to his hockey equip.

My daughter enrolled her son who has a learning disability which she informed the Principal about in Kindergarten. He started having night terrors waking up screaming. The parents of the other children told her their children came home and told them how the teacher was separating him from the rest of the class and in line on the way to lunch how she pulled him from line and screamed in his face and put him at the end of the line. She went and talked to the teacher and the teacher said she had not been told of the problems he had and it wasn't any of her business. So my daughter with drew him ,he was still 5,and is now home schooling him.It has worked out great, she joined a home schooling coalition and they meet once a week for classes like Gym and she is in control of how he is treated. Our country was a place of home schooling and I think that if more people went back to that our children would have a better education.Did you see the family whose home schooled 16 year old is a Senior in college?and her 12 year old brother is starting college?

Sounds like you need to get involved with the PTA or at the school board level, and work really hard to get funding increased to education, so parents don't have to pick up the slack. More taxes would mean more money for the schools.
In the meantime, if there is something you cannot afford, CALMLY go talk to the principal. Something can always be arranged.
