Be a good man for your boy to model himself after; be consistent in parenting him and disciplining him; teach him to be independent, but loving toward family; teach him respect and boundaries; model a good work ethic and teach him the value of hard work because that is self-esteem. Teach him to love unconditionally by loving him unconditionally but there must be boundaries and consequences if things go wrong sometimes and he should know those up front, no surprises, no entrapment. Don't talk down to him ever, don't demean or shame him in front of people or at anytime, but especially in front of people. When there are issues, take him aside so no one else is aware and talk to him. If he trusts you deeply, he will respect you deeply and love you forever!!

DON'T ever tell him that boy's don't cry! Men, boys are human beings. Crying is a good thing.
Don't ever call him a whimp. He just may grow up a bigger and better man than you've ever or will be.
DON'T tell him horror stories of "women". Teach him to be a loving careing man. He'll find a great woman being raised with that kind of respect.
Teach him that respecting certain people, like teachers at school, will make him a well liked gentleman.
Most of all give him many hugs/kisses. Children thrive on touch and security.
And most of all: Tell him you love him everyday!!

just be there for him, having a dad in your life is very important. Do things with him, whatever your hobby is include him in it. Take him places like a special guys dinner night or even a movie night.
You will find that you will develop a very close bond. My husband takes our son hunting and fishing with him. He is a plumber so when he has the chance he takes him to work with him. This way he is developing life skills and spending time with dad at the same time. Good luck and God bless!

Just be a good father. Kids learn by example. If you think your dad did okay...then follow his lead. if you think he screwed up sometimes...don't screw up like that. Two things we are not prepared for when we are born...one is death and the other is being a parent. Good luck.

Kids don't come with a manual. It already shows that you are a good father because you want to be. As long as you don't lose that mentality, you will be fine.

I took care of my younger brother, and Idk, I think as long as you care for him and make time for him, you will be ok. If you feel you don't have time for him, then don't be afraid to ask for help to others, not to raise your son, but e.g. to take care of other stuff, aka bills, the job, etc.
