I've rescued a few that were wandering.. most of them never seemed a threat.. the only one that I had an apprehension about was a great dane that was wondering by my house.. I am only 5 ft tall.. it was almost the same height on all fours.. (I live just off of a VERY busy road that has trucks going through at all times).. I did it , and very quickly figured out that it was just a puppy... a VERY sweet puppy.. big puppy.. but had no problem.. The best thing to do is to learn how to "read" dogs.. if it seems aggressive call animal control..

The sad thing is alot of people just turn their heads thinking if they don't see what is going on then they won't feel guilty!

Approaching and attempting to rescue a dog is dangerous in many ways, you not only take the chance of getting bit but you also can endanger yourself as well ~ the best thing to do is to contact your local law enforcmeent agency and get ahold of their ACO (Animal Control Officer) and request assistance from them, they are trained and better equipped to handle situations of those nature.

Instinct would be to rescue them. I guess your taking the chance of getting bit not knowing the dog. I would rather get bit than see a dog hurt/killed. If I couldn't get them then I would call animal control to report the stray in hopes that they could get him.

I would rescue him without a question. As far as being scared of biting, I would not approach him in a scary way. But if he is in town, i would think that he has a good nature. Wistle to him as you approach him and see if his tail wags. He may even come to you

I approached the dog- he kept running away- very shy, scared, and confused- so I dropped to all fours, called to him in a calm, soothing voice, and got him by the collar- I gently led him to my house, stopping and calming him whenever he tried to pull away. I put him on a leash, walked him around the neighbourhood- noone knew him- I asked everyone I saw. So I put him on my dog's tieout in the front yard and called animal control.

You try to lure it with treats, speak in a nice soft voice, and get down to their level so your not intimidating to them aslo you was to put you hand in a fist so that your knuckles are on top, so that the dog can smell you, and not take your fingers. If you get close to the dog, and the hairs on the back of their neck rises up, DON'T GO NEAR IT. Their already scared at it is.
Just to name somethings you can do.

...this happened a couple times, i just see a dog wandering the street, i was driving, and i kind of just opened the passenger door, and if it comes in, i just let him in, and contacted the owner via collar. there were times when the dogs would run away, and thats fine, too. i figure a dog wouldnt come into my car just to bite me. dogs arent vindictive in that sense....

if the dog is too fearful, it will not come to you (don't chase it - it will only run faster and be in more danger). if it comes to you, look for signs of aggressiveness - piloerection (hackles up), ears forward, stiff body, mouth - either closed tightly or lips pulled back, teeth bared, snarling, etc.
