As someone else has said, not all christians get offended when someone questions their beliefs, but for those that do, it's not something unique to Christianity or even religion. You yourself seem to hint at the fact you might get offended when Christians express their belief that the non-religious will burn in hell.
You see, what is going on here is that when you question or attack something that is near and dear to someone's heart, such as religion they of course get emotional and feel as if they are the one being attacked. In the same way, when people attack the non-religious and say that according to the bible they will go to hell (which is a mere statement of fact-- not that they are going to hell, but the fact that the bible says that) then the non-religious get emotional, because the Christian appears to be questioning that person's morality and worth as human being. I mean, you can say, I'm not attacking the person, just their beliefs, but a person's beliefs make up a large portion of who they are so it's hard to seperate the two.
But I do think there IS a problem unique to religion that comes from a misunderstanding of faith. Some seem to think that questioning the existance of God shows a lack of faith. They see faith as believing without evidence or reasons, which is silly because if you sat down and asked these same Christians why they believed in God, they'd give you REASONS (whether dubious or logically sound they'd give you what they believe to be sound reasons) but they would NOT say, "Oh. No reason."
But a great deal of people do engage in irrational debate characterized by outbursts of emotions. Even atheists. And even me. But there are rational and good questions that must be answered in both realms and any openminded person should welcome those challenges.
Thanks. Hope that helped.

Seems to me that atheists must be somewhat superstitioius themselves. I mean, for what possible reason would any sensible person take offense at something they claim doesn't exist anyway? And who decides who "deserves" to question anything when the one(s) doing all the questioning seem to exhibit real doubt within themselves as to whether or not what they're hearing may, in fact, just turn out to be true after all? If some native from the Amazon told me that I was going to suffer the wrath of some mythical beast if I didn't send them x amount of money each month, guess what? They're going to be penniless. I'm simply not going to entertain such a notion much less argue and debate the matter with them.
Atheists believe that when a person dies, that's it; they're no more than worm food. So, where does the "offense" part come in about being told they're going to burn in a lake of fire for all eternity? What are they so worried about if they're so absolutely (yet, not with scientific, empirical evidence strength certainty) sure that such a horrid place doesn't exist? Why the fear? Unless they really........hmmmm.

Dear Jedi Mystic Maiden,
I think in general everyone can get offended when their personal beliefs are questioned and more than that religion we know is a very personal issue. Not everyone does get offended- a lot has to do with how secure and grounded they are in their beliefs and more than that- how mature they are. On this website there are very strong Christians, atheists, etc. -- who have a history in what they believe- people don't just believe things that they are told blindly. So just like in your mind- someone can't convince you that God or the Bible is real- you have done your research to come to that conclusion- there are many Chrisitans who have done their research and came to a different conclusion. Disagreement does not mean that something is being taken personally- although it's understandable that this can be a very divisive topic that people can easily get worked up about.
i think it's kind of silly to blame Christians for taking things personally when their beliefs are attacked--- they are people just like everyone else- and i think it's not particular to Christianity but any person of any religion.
In terms of the "supersillious attitude" first- let me just simply say that the Bible says what it says. You may doubt the Bible and not believe that it's true- but there are people who believe that it is. The attitude is the key. Do i believe that people who don't believe in Jesus are not going to know God and that knowing God is the only way to heaven? Yes. Do i threaten and preach fire and brimstone- no! The sadness of knowing people will go to hell- is why as a Christian i share the message of God's love-- in terms of people deserving to get questioned- i hope people would question where they are going eternally.
It's also unfair to assume that Christians are blaming "god" or the "devil" for their viewpoints. The latter makes no sense- why would a Christian blame the "devil" for his viewpoint? Doesn't being a Christian mean that you follow and your worldview is based on God's teachings and not the devil's (you have me confused on that one).
i think it should also be noted that even though a person can have a different viewpoint- their viewpoint is a reality to them. Christians can get all worked up and take things personally (esp. when it comes to God) because God is real and personal for them-- perhaps as an atheist- God is (first non-existent to you) so you may not take him seriously- but that's not the reality for a Chrisitan. i'm just giving you a point of view- we're not here to argue yours or my opinion on God or the Bible- just saying that it's silly to think that people who place their lives in God's hands- wouldn't get a little worked up when that is challenged. How one responds to the challenge is the key. I've seen lots of Christians on here return insult for insult- and that shows a lot about how much they still need to grow. Different believers are at different places in their maturity and so they react accordingly.
Hope that helps. Kindly,
Nickster

Do you think God cares if He offends you with the choice to be forgiven for what you've done, or go to hell attached to the sins you have commited? He has blatantly told you many times that sin will burn in hell to be destroyed, you choose to remain stuck to it or be free from it.
It's an OFFER, nothing more. The choice. I personally don't care if you don't like hearing about it, I didn't either until I put it to the test. I looked up some of the things on the end times because I heard it will happen in our lifetime. Not a week after reading some of it, Iran came out and did EXACTLY what the bible said. A few months later they did it AGAIN.
Just because you don't want to hear it and don't like it, doesnt make it any less true. The word of God convicts you, just as it did me, and every other person who finally accepts it. Nobody likes to hear they aren't "good" as a person, it's not until you actually take an honest look around that you see that people aren't good. If you want to ridicule us, feel free. The bible tells us that every time we are mocked and beaten for His name, we will be rewarded in heaven. So throw your stones, pick up your sticks, I'm waiting. :)

I've gotta agree with da3rdxsacharm on this one. Not all Christians are offended by atheists questioning our beliefs. Personally, I LOVE it. I've learned SO MUCH from atheists on here, and I love how they make me think (although I have yet to find anyone who has challenged my faith enough to make me doubt).
However, I AM offended by the way that SOME atheists question religions. Sometimes, the questions are just disrespectful. But if a person is respectful, what do I care if they question Christianity or any of its practices?

well none of us take criticism of our beliefs very well! For us it is not that bad, we expect to be criticised, for we fall into the area of what is classed as a minority, within the theistic world!
Christians take criticism worse, as they feel it as a personal attack, remember they have faith. Now faith by definition, is a commitment, not just of the theory, but of the lifestyle. They give themselves to this Faith, they give their all, it is not just a subject, it is not just a choice, to them this is the truth, THE, truth and through their faith, they have no reason to doubt, question or validate this truth, thus they are drenched in it, they, wear it, they breath it, they sleep in it, they are it! thus they can not help themselves, to them we are the ones that are wrong, we will be judged, we are tantamout to the devil, for in their eyes, if you don't believe you are, lost, sinfull, damned, without soul and the devils advocate. to put it in a crude way; they are zombies, not of the physical, but of the mind, their religion is what defines them, they are saturated it it ,and it will take forever to make them see any reason or doubt, we could preach discrepencies from the bible 'till we are coarse, they still would not listen, for FAITH, means just that, ignorance to any other explanation, it just IS!
some Christians will see this as an attack, but I assure them that I mean no disrespect, it is just my opinion

i'm a Christian and that i'm not mad at any atheist. i used to be an atheist on my thank you to discover the reality so I understand. everyone seems to be calling and has questions and that's ok. i don't even pay suggestions to atheists who criticize by way of fact i be attentive to they suspect they're doing the incredible element. it incredibly is okay. :D yet different people who're Christian have diverse factors of view. we at the instant are not all the comparable, so it incredibly is in simple terms my opinion. i think like it incredibly is not following the example of Jesus to get mad at atheists. whilst Jesus grew to become into approximately to get crucified by capacity of persons who did not have faith He grew to become into the Messiah, it incredibly is what got here approximately. (NIV Matthew financial ruin 27 verses 11, 12, 13, 14) verse 11 : " meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor and the governor asked him, "Are you king of the Jews?" "you have stated so," Jesus replied. 12: whilst he grew to become into accused by capacity of the administrative monks and the elders, he gave no answer. 13: Then Pilate asked him, " do not you pay attention the testimony they're bringing against you?" 14: yet Jesus made no respond, not even to a single charge- to the large amazement of the governor." So if we save on with the example of Jesus, we can be like Him. interior the face of unbelievers, we don't take offense, we don't rebuttal, we in straightforward terms carry forth to those that extremely are searching for solutions and desire to pay attention the reality, not carry forth to win a controversy or teach a element. it extremely is dropping our time shall we use to truly help somebody.

Because they are scared, they really do not want to be questioned ,it might make them loose their faith.
And since they are so brainwashed, they think that losing this faith might result in eternal torture. Remember ,in christianity the only thing that will send you to hell is to not acknowledge that Jesus died for your sin, it does not matter if you were a good person in life ,you will get tortured forever because of a retarded belief and they do not want to risk that.

If you're speaking of Christians as a group, you're wrong. Not every one is offended by this.
If you're speaking of individuals, you'll have to ask the individual.
