What was in God's plan was to rescue Lot and his family from the judgment that was to be carried out against Sodom and Gomorrah. However, His directions were very clear, don't look back. Lot's wife did look back yearning for what she had left behind instead of looking forward to the b;essings of God in the future.
The apostle Peter describes the destiny of those who continue in sin, especially the repetition of the same sin over and over again.
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
2 Peter 2:20-22
This an example of willful sin and a truly unrepentant heart. When we are convicted by the Holy Spirit of our sins and repent there is a change in our lives and we desire to follow God in spirit and truth. Delayed obedience is disobedience. And disobedience has only one result, eternal separation from God.
The prophet Samuel declared to King Saul, " Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams; For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
1 Samuel 16:15
Saul lost his kingdom because of disobedience and we will lose the heavenly kingdom of Almighty God if we knowingly continue in sin. And Lot's wife lost hers for the same reason.

That was actually sort of the point. Lot wasn't a great guy. Not by a long shot. But everyone else was worse - that was why the towns needed to be destroyed. The sin in question, however, wasn't homosexuality. It was mob violence against strangers. That they wanted to "know" them didn't just mean "have sex with them" - it was wanting to rape and take hold of their possessions. Some commentaries suggest that Lot knew his guests were angels, and needed special protection, but even if that was not the case, he understood that when someone is a guest in your house, it is your obligation as a good citizen to protect them. Offering his daughters was a horrible thing, but the town clearly weren't interested in sex with someone they knew - they wanted to teach the newcomers a lesson. That's what made him better than his neighbors. That he understood the concept of hospitality to strangers.

The Lord doesn't want to loose any soul, hence the explanation to not look back. She was given the choice. The path she took ultimately ended her life. Not unlike a lot of people today, who simply refuse to have enough faith and courage to make the righteous choice .... its sad.

If i am mistaken correct me. God told Lot not to let anyone look back at Sodom or they would die...or in the least something bad would happen. Lot's wife looked back of her own accord.
