There was a question about letting a 3 1/2 year old drink from a sippy cup. I got 3 thumbs down for saying that breaking the habit was far overdue. I have a 3 1/2 year old who has been drinking froim a regular cup for 1 1/2 years now. Is my son advanced or am I right, a 3 1/2 year old should not be using a sippy cup?

I know my son is not advanced because he hasn't drank from a sippy cup, I was being sarcastic. It just annoys me to see a 3 year old walking around with a sippy cup or pacifier in their mouth.

I think you are right. My son was drinking out of a regular cup by time he was 10 months old. I only gave him a sippy cup when we were in a car and the bottle went out the door at a little over a year old. I guess it is each persons prerogative as to give children the easy way out. I think sippy cups are unnecessary and there is no reason a child cannot use a regular drinking cup. My son's motor skills are great and I think making him drink from a cup and eat with a spoon/fork helped him out.
Good Day!

I didn't see that other question, but I personally feel sippy cups are a waste of money. However, I also recognize the need or desire to use them to avoid having a mess. My daughter has been using a regular cup (with help at first) since she had her first drink of anything except milk and entirely since she was 1 (bottle went bye bye). Occassionally, I'd use a sippy cup if I couldn't be right there to watch her. About 2 or so, she could use a regular cup with no supervision.
But - I do not think there is a drop dead age to stop using sippy cups. On the other hand - if the child is 3-1/2 and has only had sippy cups and never learned about real cups, then I see that as a problem!

My son is 3 1/2 and still uses a sippy cup here at home. He can drink from regular cups, straws, water bottles, etc... but here we use sippy cups because he is such a KLUTZ!!! He is constantly knocking over his drinks and the sippy seal at least minimizes the spill. Playtex makes a cup that doesn't have the stick up sippy thing, but rather the top is shaped like a regular cup with a whole in the rim for the juice to come out of.
Your son is not more advanced than mine. My son just likes to walk around with his drink and I dont want it spilled all over the house.

My son just turned 4. He no longer uses a sippy cup, but at age 3 he did, and sometimes a regular cup too. Not because I am lazy--but mainly because he is small for his age and clumsy like his mom lol...I introduced him to a regular cup soon after he turned a year old, but the sippy was easier when in the car, etc (have you ever tried to clean up Kool-Aid? not easy lol)...it's different strokes for different folks. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I say let the kids decide. They'll let you know when they're ready, and every child is different.
And even if moms do let their kids drink from a sippy a little longer than other moms, I still don't view that as being lazy. "Lazy" is not in a mother's vocabulary. No room for it.

I personally don't give my 5 yr. old a sippy but my 18 month old yes!!!
every parent is different and has things that they do. I don't think you should have gotten a thumbs down (unless you were extremely rude)...BUT I don't think others even for your question need to be making comments either!!!
how do you know if MY 3 yr. old NEEDS a sippy?? are you there with them every day?? do you clean up the spills from a regular cup??? mind your own and don't comment about how others raise their children if you can't be civil!!!
god..the things people will do for 2 points!
I hope you never need sound advice!! (this was aimed towards someone that answered a few above me stating that her child was special because they didn't NEED the sippy)

My 3 1/2 year old daughter uses both. A cup at home or restaurants when sitting at the table. A sippy cup on the go (driving, shopping, etc.)

This is the same as the bottle, binky, stay at home or work. It is whatever works for the people there are a lot worse things they can do than let their 3 1/2 yr old use a sippy cup. Mine still did about half the time at that age.

My son just turned 3 last week, he uses both, the sippy cup in the morning, when he just wakes up, and the rest of the day he will drink from a normal glass

as long as they know how to drink from a regular cup I see nothing wrong with a sippy cup. I have never understood the problem people have with that. Come to think of it, I dont understand many of these things and why people are always pushing for their child to reach the next step. slow down. their kids. they will grow up soon enough. chill out about a cup
Why would it annoy you for someone else's child to have a sippy or a pacifier? why do you think its your business enough for it to even annoy you?

I personally don't see it as a big deal either way. It's just a cup. No, your son is not advanced for drinking from a regular cup. No, its not a big deal if a 3 1/2 year old drinks from a sippy cup
