I'm not too good at baking, but one of my friends has a birthday and I'd like to surprise her by making her some cupcakes. My question is, can you buy the premade cupcake mix at the store or do you just buy the regular cake mix and you just make it in small portions? Thank you :)

Any cake mix should have directions for making cupcakes with it. Just check the box to be sure before you purchase it. You mix the batter the same, the difference is in the cooking time and perhaps temp since the cake is in smaller pieces.

There are some places where you can get ideas to arrange cupcakes like puzzle pieces of a larger cake, such as sitting them next to each other in a squiggly line, decorating them all together like a caterpillar (the clearest example I can think of even though I know it is for a child's cake).

There are even special pans to buy that have specific shapes of smaller cakes that fit together. This is kind of a cross between a fancy decorated cake (that is already in single serve portions) and cupcakes. You could do different flavors or whatever for the different shapes.

You buy regular cake mix and instead of pouring the batter into a large pan, you put paper liners in muffin tins and fill them each 2/3 full. Bake fore about 18-20 minutes. 1 box of cake mix will make about 24 cupcakes,

How about just make a cake from scratch, it's not like cakes are terribly complicated and a cake mix is really just packaging for the dry ingredients. The difference between a cake and a cupcake is the pan and how long you bake it for as cupcakes are smaller and bake more quickly.

check www.wilton.com and search for cupcakes. They have a whole site (i dont remember the link now) with step by step instructions, ideas, tips, recipes and decorations with pictures.
also google cupcake fun. this is a good site too.
No need for premade mixes. cupckaes are so easy and so versatile that you will start creating your own ideas after you start.
Try to make them from scratch. It does not require any special ability and they taste thousand times better and they are healthier because you know what you put in them.
pre made mixes have too many artificial flavorings and colorants and preservers.

You can just use cake mixes. Online you can find ways to add ingredients like pineapple, nuts, and chocolate to the cake mixes which is extremely easy to do, but really improves the finished product.
