Thaw it out, and the stick your nose in very close to it and smell it. You'll know immediately if it's rancid..
It's probably fine, it's been frozen.

If its been in the freezer you are okay, but if the meat was in the fridge with a sell by date of 8/29/07 I would say throw it away.

The sell by date does not mean the food goes bad on that date. Meat can stay frozen long past that date. 6 Months for some meats, a little longer for others.

Did you buy it by 8/29? Meat in the freezer will be good for several months.

A "sell by" date is only for stores to know when (approx.) the product should be taken off the shelf. They don't want to sell you any food that will spoil quicker than usual. This date is only 2 weeks ago, however I would hurry up and eat it before it DOES go bad =)

It actually depends on the type of freezer you have because some are only suitable to store food in until their best before date. And it depends on the meat that it is, see this website for a chart on different foods and their storage!

If you bought it before the sell by date and put it in the freezer then it should be fine. When you thaw it if it has any trace of bad odor then toss it.

I have kept frozen meat 4 years and it was still good. Don't worry about it if it has been frozen since before the date on it. When you thaw it, cook it that day.

The sell by or use by dates are for fresh meat. Since your's has been frozen since before the stamped date it should be just fine.
