I have Leonbergers, a giant breed similar to the St. Bernard. I can see why you want one, St. Bernards are great dogs. But, since you want a dog that will be happy, I would say look at breeds that are more adapted to a climate like yours. If you want a really big dog, there are some really large sighthounds with short, fine coats that should do well there. Awhile ago I made the decision not to move to Florida from Michigan because my dogs would not be happy. I can't recommend a St. Bernard for your climate.

It depends on what you call hot but if you mean a tropical climate with temperatures regularly exceeding 90 degrees than I would say no. Most giant dog breeds(st.bernards, mastiffs, etc.) like these have trouble with extended periods with really hot conditions. Also notice I'm saying giant breeds and not large dog breeds. There are several large dogs that thrive in hot climates but not many huge dogs like st. bernards.

He will adapt to the climate, however it will be necessary to be very careful of how much exercise you give him in the hottest part of the day. Use the evenings to walk him, train him indoors where it will be cooler, and for heavens sake don't shave him. That hair protects his skin from the sun and heat. But honestly, It's possible, but it will take a lot of work on your part. Consider shaving your dog, especially when it's the hottest. Keep him air conditioned always, and try only exercising him at night or in the early mornings when its the coolest. My uncle has one and that is what he does. The little dude well the not so little dude is soo happy and is living in great health conditions.

Where I live, it can get hot and humid. My grandparents used to have a Saint Bernard. They made sure he had plenty of water and cool places to lay.
So yes, they can live in hot places. But they would be mighty miserable, unless you make special arrangements for them.

It's not a very good idea. I have Saints and the dog would be miserable. Even in the Pa. summers they suffer without air-conditioning. It's just not their climate. Others will tell you its OK but, really why make a dog suffer.
