National Security has always been a reason for draconian powers. The national identity cards are being put forward to us on the basis of solving crimes preventing illegal immigrants etc. The first quite laudable the second controversial. The danger is actually greater than this. The government is trying to encourage us to cut down on our carbon footprints. if it could restrict travel to what it deems as essential travel only it would reduce that footprint. Once it has the National Identity Card in operation it will be a fairly simple matter to insist that a permit is obtained to travel more than say 20 miles away from home. Control of population movement. They have not been able to do this since the enclosure of common lands about 250 years ago. if we agree to this it will not happen immediately but wait until we have yet another national security crisis. OK you think I'm mad I really hope I am and proved to be wrong.

It is a good security measure, for big fortune 500 companies, it keeps competitors out, and makes it so people can't lie about who they are to get past the background check.
