The reason you can't use human toothpase is because it contains fluoride. The reason the label says "do not swallow" is because if you ingest enough of it, fluoride is toxic. During the Victorian era, people committed suicide using fluoride. Even if you have a dog that drools buckets, you can't teach them to spit it out! If that wasn't enough, human toothpaste is very strongly flavored, and most dogs don't find the taste appealing. When you have a dog as small as a chihuahua, you don't even need a toothbrush. They sell little "brushes" that slip over your finger. A gauze square works really well, too, and your little guy may find it more comfortable.

Human toothpaste is not good for dogs. The big thing is human toothpaste is not meant to be eaten we rinse/spit which a dog is not able to do. They have dog toothpaste that taste like meats so the dog enjoys it a lot more in most cases then some minty toothpaste. Of course the dogs natural toothbrush is a nice raw bone.

You can use a human toothbrush, but not human adult toothpaste.
If you can't find dog toothpaste anywhere, you can use baby human toothpaste that has no fluoride and is labeled as safe to swallow. Whatever is made for human babies is tested much more before it reaches the shelves than dog toothpaste.
Regulations for pet food and human food are a big difference.

Human toothbrush yes, human toothpaste, no. Human toothpaste has some chemicals that can be harmful to a dog if digested such as high amounts of floride. You can go to any pet store and get a enzyme based dog toothpaste with a flavor dogs will like.

The human toothbrush is fine but you can't use the human toothpaste. You have to go to the pet store and buy doggie toothpaste.

The toothbrush is fine, but DON'T use human toothpaste. Flouride is poisonous to dogs, and they can't just spit it out like we do. Most vets sell toothpaste made just for dogs.

Doh! looks like a bunch of people didn't bother to read EVERYTHING the question asker wrote! Baby toothpaste (like you SAID you were going to use) or some of the non-floridated organic toothpastes are fine for your dog

DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE FOR YOUR DOG!!! The chemicals are very dangerous for dogs. You can purchase special enzymatic, dog-safe toothpastes at your vet's office or at a local pet store.
