This doesn't make sense to me. If I paid something off, how can they in the same sentence say it was a charge off? This makes the account look negative when it isn't. If I dispute, will they have to take it off?

If it was charged off and you paid it it will show up as Paid off and charged off so that anyone looking at your account will see that it was charged off originally and that it was paid off. This is legal and happens all the time.

Your best option would have been to negotiate having the charged off lable removed when you paid it off...but since you didn't do this you can try to dispute the item. Depending on how long ago it occured they may not be able to validate it and may remove it.

I had a similar situation when I looked at my credit and noticed that I had student loans with a zero balance reported as delinquent. I contacted the credit bureaus and disputed. They investigated and removed this from my account as there was no way I was delinquent for not paying $0.00.

As far as the charge off, there may have been a small balance remaining on your card such as interest that they charged off. They could also have reported a charge off in error. Contact the big 3 credit bureaus and dispute if you feel this is in error.

Dispute it with the credit bureau. Chances are it was a typo.
