from a linguistics standpoint, the phrase "thank god" has shimmy'd into the english language as slang, meaning... "wiew!". I am positive, that even those who believe in God, use it in a very laze'fare fashion. Realizing that your american discover bill wasn't late after all, one might say "Thank God." I think anyone can use this phrase, no matter religious ideaology.

Whatever a person chooses to say but why would an atheist want to say thank God?

Sure if that's what they want to do. What's it hurting? If anybody, it's themselves. However, some atheists have their own god(s) that they worship or believe in. It seems that they just don't believe in the ALMIGHTY GOD! Gods can be of many different arenas. They just don't believe in the ONE ALMIGHTY GOD which is their choice. As long as theydon't push any of their beliefs onto me...it's not hurting me, is it? This is how I see it. I'm just as strong in my belief of God as they are in not believing in God. Mutual respect is all it takes to get along. So..thank your god(s) all you want to...I sure do say "thank you,God"all the time to mine. And I say, "Thank God" all the time when something good happens bc my God is the one that lets all those good things happen!

I am an Atheist, and I say Thank God and God knows And God bless you all the time.

They are just sayings that we inadvetantly picked up as we grew, much like how we developed our accents.

People already say things containing the words god and jesus christ without meaning anything. It's just a way of expressing yourself.

Thank god someone else feels that way.

Alternatively, "Thank feck" could make for a nice change. I prefer to use "thank feck" as much as I can... people don't generally like that saying as much as "thank god", though. I wonder why...

i say it all the time, not because i have any specific belief system, but simply as a force of habit. god tells you himself he doesnt want you using his name in vain; that includes using his name so lightly. its simply cultural for even the most pious christian to use his name in such a way, so why should i care?
