The hybrid has wider tires, flat handlebars and usually a wider seat. They are built to give a mountain bike riding style without sacrificing too much road ability.

Hybrid is a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. A road bike has very thin tires, best for driving on the road because it creates less friction with the ground, however, if you are planning on biking on any surface besides pavement I would suggest a hybrid. The hybrids have wider tires than a road bike, but not very wide off road tires like mountain bikes. A hybrid is a good multi-purpose bike.

Hybrids meld the best of both worlds, a cross between a road and an offroad bike. Usually the compromise leans towards comfort - with an upright seating position and big cushiony tyres being the main points that provide the comfort.

Basically, it'll feel nice on road without being too "hardcore" and it'll cope with simple offroading, such as canal towpaths and a trek through the woods.

Well a hybrid animal is an animal that has been crossed between two different species of animals or two different breeds of the same type of animal. A mule is a hybrid animal off of a donkey and a horse. My cats are hybrid animals off of the Jungle Cat of Egypt/Africa and a domestic cat. That is what hybrid means. I'm guessing that a hybrid bike has some features from two different types of bikes that they combined to make a more efficient bike or a different style of bike.
