i've been around schizophrenics periodically and most are pretty decent people with a very severe physical condition that affects their interactions.
I've been to AA meetings where our regular psych patient has gone off his meds are was yelling at the corner of the room with no one present. We just redirected him and got him focused on the "world around him".. Sometimes they go off their meds and can get scary to people who don't understand the illness.
Generally speaking they are harmless. They are struggling each day to maintain some semblance of reality. And for them it is truly a struggle. It's nothing they have control over, ABSOLUTELY nothing they can do about it.
You might look up the word "Tolerance" in the dictionary. I am grateful to have them around because I can see as much as a trudging through life can be difficult, it would be 1000x worse with a serious psych disorder.
Ignorance of the disease is what creates your fear. If you know what is going on with them and "TRY" to understand you won't have the fear. You might try thinking of yourself LESS.

I am really troubled by your question. You see I am a schizophrenic; I was diagnosed as schizophrenia paranoia over 40 years ago. I am not hostile, instead am an introvert. I have known many schizophrenic patients of differing diagnoses, in hospital and out over the years. I have never met a violent one. Indeed most are withdrawn trying to figure out what is going wrong with their minds. Statistics show schizophrenics are no more violent or dangerous than so called "normal" people. They are usually put in hospital to protect them from others because they are unable to adequately fend for themselves. Where they get their "dangerous" reputation is from the media which tends to stress their diagnoses whenever they do do something violent. It is a stigma which we schizophrenics learn to ignore.
I suggest visiting a local psychiatric hospital and get to know a few of the schizophrenic patients to dispel your unwarranted fears.
Good luck, good mental health, peace and love!

What is even more interesting is that YOU rarely know who the schizophrenics are! Despite what you have heard, most of them are not at all dangerous...I worked with a lot of them over the past 6 years. Once they're diagnosed and get treatment, a lot of them end up functioning fairly well. It's the majority of the population walking around with undiagnosed mental illness that you should really be worried about.

Depends on the schizophrenic. I have a male friend who's one and as long as he's on medication he's just like me and you. To generalize like you have is like saying all men are violent! My friend is one of the most gentle men I know, you have just made him a danger and you have never even met him!

by way of fact they do no longer understand what to anticipate, by way of loss of information of the affliction... ... and whether they do, they understand the implications and subject in coping with those human beings. Their chemical imbalances make treating them and being around them a in specific circumstances torturous friendship/kinship. it fairly is a tragic and confusing state to be in - for the two the guy with the subject and the guy attempting to be supportive.

No, unless they are attacking me (which I am no more likely to be attacked by any other person). I have dealt with drunks in my voluntary work, and one of them attacked the paramedic, I wasn't afraid of him either (he was fine with me).
