Take a copy of the marriage license to the DMV to get your ID changed and make a copy for the social security dept when you apply for a new card. After that technically all you have to do is start signing your married name on forms, documents etc.
I was reading the answer you got from bestadvicechick...I'm not sure where you live but I have been married twice and SS depts. in Ohio and Florida prefer you to change your photo ID first but you might want to check the laws in the state in which you reside.
Good luck.

The first thing you need to do is take your marriage certificate to the Social Security Administration... they will issue you a new Social Security card, same number - new name. You wont get the card right away, but they will give you a piece of paper that proves that you did go and change your name with them. You will need that piece of paper in order to change things like your Drivers License and such... the most important thing is the Social Security... then you can work at getting the others changed (drivers license, military ID, etc.)... but it should all be done within 30 days if at all possible.
I know in most states, you cannot change anything unless you have already been to Social Security (this is the way of changing your name with the government)

The first place is social security office. Make sure you have your certified copy of your marriage license. I went there the week after I got married. Then I went to the DMV and changed all my info. I sat down one day and called every single credit card I had and changed my name, then went down to the bank and changed my bank act. also any bills or mortgages in your old name.

Well in Ca you have to get your marriage license first, then you need to make copies for every thing you are changing your name on. Then go to the SS office they will give you a slip saying you have changed your name, then you need to go to the DMV to change it there, Then after you receive your new SS card and Driver license you can change your bank account, CC cards, bills,etc... Best wishes and good luck to you on your wedding day!!

Go to your local social security office.....most major cities have one. Before you go, look on the social security website to see what you need to take with you. For me, it was my marriage license, driver's license and old SS card...if you have one. You fill out a simple form and show them your marriage license to change your name. In about 3-4 weeks, you'll get your new SS card in the mail with your new name listed on there. It's important to change it with Social security FIRST because most DMV's won't let you change your name there until you can show them your name has been changed with ss first.
Once you've gotten the SS form submitted, you can start calling your credit card companies. Just call the 1-800 number on the back and speak to a cust svc rep and tell them you just got married and need to change the name on the account. At that time, you can add your husband as well if you choose to do so. Then remember to change your name on memberships, magazine subscriptions, utilities, etc.

In SC you can change your name on the wedding paperwork. You'll need to deal with the DMV, Social Security people, banks, businesses any and every place that has your name. IRA/401(k) junk all of your utilities.

Right away you will take the signed marriage license to the county clerk's office for registration. Then you get a certified copy of it and take it to the social security office, the DMV and any other place you need to change your name.

Social security office first, then DMV, then everything else (passport, voter registration, school ID, bank accounts, credit cards etc). Call your local social security office and find out exactly what you need to do to get your name changed with them, and go from there.

you can start changing your name as soon as you get your certified copies of your marriage license, and it is easiest to change within 3 months of the wedding.
take as many proofs of address, marriage, and name as you can. go to the DMV first, then social security. those two forms of ID make it tons easier to change your name everywhere else (insurance provider, bank, employer, etc)
