Yesterday I had a colonoscopy done with biopsies. Ever since waking up, I have had pretty severe cramping in my abdomen, mostly on my left side. Is this normal? I mean, could my body still be reacting to all the laxatives I had to take? Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

During the colonoscopy, your colon is filled with air so that the doctor can see the inside of the colon. They usually suck most of the air out when withdrawing the scope, but they can't get it all.

Some people get crampy with that, but it should be subsiding by now.

You need to pass that air.

To be on the safe side, call the doctor who did the test. There are rare (but severe) complications that can occur, such as perforated bowel. Your doctor needs know what is going on with you.

Pain is never normal. It's your body's way of telling you something is wrong. If you've had abdominal surgery before, you may have scar tissue that made it more difficult for the scope to pass through. I'm assuming you told the doctor about the cramping before you left the hospital or clinic. If you are still experiencing cramping or pain now, you need to call the doctor at once. You should also be drinking a lot of water to rehydrate yourself.

I doubt the laxatives because you probably had fleet and that dehydrates you, The biopsy is the culprit because they took a tissue sample and the machine that they put you on so that the doctors could go in for a look see could have added to the sensation. You should start feeling relies in three days, Good luck and I hope you have clean results.

Your discharge instructions clearly state to call your doctor if such symptoms occur.

The anesthetic you probably received was Versed. It affects your memory for a few hours. You may not remember getting these instructions or hearing the nurse review them with you. Find them now. You probably left them in the car or in your purse.

I only had discomfort during the colonoscopy; not afterwards.
