ive been on these anti depressants for 3 months now and i seem to be having the worst week of all this week. should they have kicked in well and truly by now or should i give them longer.
i just dont feel right at all. i am going to go and see the doc next week but was just wondering if this was "normal".

Give it time, been on he myself and i was on them just over a year, they recommend that you should give them that amount of time however if you feel that they are not doing much and that u are taking steps to help yourself as that is important too, it may be that the doc may up the dosage which is no embarrassing loss as eventually u will over come what ever porbs that you have and the dosage will be reduced, never come off them all at once u need to do it slowly.
I'm on the better side of my depression and have been for nearly a year now so it does work.
Best of luck and i hope all goes well for u in the future

I think they should've kicked in by now. They should be working quite well after 6-8 weeks. When I started on it, I was feeling pretty good after 2 weeks and then continued to notice more improvement for the next 3-4 weeks. You might need to try a different medication. I know I had to try a couple of different anti-depressants before I tried Citalopram and stuck with it. With the other anti-depressants I tried, I could tell they weren't working well for me after only 2-3 weeks.

I took citalopram for nearly two years, and they took AGES to work. The doctors usually tell you it'll take about 6 weeks, but like you, mine took months to kick in. You should get there in the end though, and it is worth it. However, some antidepressants just don't have any effect on some people, so if you're worried, it might be worth having a word with the doctor and asking to try a different type. Have you thought about having counselling? Antidepressants are more effective when used in conjunction with some kind of therapy. It provides a more lasting solution to depression. Good luck x

Citalopram does take a while to work but even then it may not be the medication for you. I had some problems in the past and was initially prescribed Prozac and they seemed to have no impact at all, I was then put on to Citalopram and with in a month things started to turn around, so it may be that you just have to be patient 'though I know thats not easy.
Good luck in the future

I have been on citalopram for two years and only the last couple of months have i started to feel anything like my old self. I must admit it seems along time and I did have some pretty bad set backs on the way.
I am on the maximum dose of 60mg and to be quite honest have thought about coming off them but am now scared if I do will I slip back to the same gibbering wreck that I was. Always willing to talk about it!!

Hi Leanne c............After three months the citalopram should be well and truly working. If you are getting side effects from these then it is important to contact your GP, as you should with any medication. You may find they can tweak the dose up a bit.
Please bear in mind, that citalopram are only a mild anti-deppressant okay.

These tablets should kick in in about 14 days, the doctor gave you a lower dose just to see how you got on the them.
When you go back to the doctor he will increase the dosage and you will feel a lot better. The reason he gives a low dose to begin with is in case you have side effects.

It can take from 15 - 30 days for your body to become saturated and the meds to do what they are supposed to do. I've taken the same medication and initially it did seem to make things worse, just pay attention to what you feel and report it to your doctor, if things get bad to hell with an appointment call or go through the er, good luck!

i was on citalopram for about a year. it usually takes about three to six weeks for anti deppressants to start working, and when you first start them your symptoms often get worse before they get better. if you are really worried you should see your doctor again. good luck and keep your chin up :)
