Shake a box of dry cat food or run the electric can opener. If he doesn't come, he's dead.

first off, if it's not breathing, it's probably dead. but take it to a vet for sure/to know how your cat died before you bury it...because if it has something to do with an animal or substance at your house, you should know. =(

Touch it and see how it feels. If he or she is dead (or has been dead awhile) it will be sort of stiff. You can also tell if it is breathing or not by touching it. If you think it is gross, put your hand in a plastic bag so you technically are not touching it.
Best wishes!

Beforeyou do anything,
1. Ask a grown up
2. Take it to a vet
3. Wait a few hours. If he gets stiff he is dead.

Put your ear to his chest and listen for a heart beat. Also, if you can pick him up by the tail like a frying pan....it's time to dig a hole.

If it's dead it would be stiff and cold and no movement of the eyes.
