Like todvango says, it's so you'll see it, and recognize it for what it is. The yellow school bus color is unique. There is even a law (in NH anyway) that says you must re-paint it a different color when it's not used as a school bus anymore.

The color is called National School Bus Yellow. About 60 yrs ago a study determined that this color was most visible. Federal and state laws require it to be used on all school buses.

Like some road signs that are painted yellow, "railroad crossing", "school crossing", school buses that are painted yellow so motorists can be on alert to slow down while approaching it, especially while those red lights are flashing to prepare them to stop.

I live in England, but I'm guessing so you can spot them easily. Both for the kids who are waiting for them and for other road users to take care.
