any weapon you are skilled with, or a weapon that is a fire arm or distance weapon like a bow or crossbow.

Your question implies that the katana was some kind of super-weapon.

it is just a sword. Actually, it is a shorter sword that (generally) only has one edge sharpened and is not straight (giving it better thrusting potential) and it is also not a very deep curve (giving it the benefits certain cavalry swords might have that you might use to get around someone's guard- using it like a shotel if you can switch quickly).

personally I find it inferior in design to many other swords. The technique by which they deal with the hard/flexibility issue (ability to hold an edge vs. durability) is a decent idea however the design leaves out a "short" or back edge for more efficiency (genrally, double edged katanas are rare, but not unheard of), is generally shorter than even single handed european swords and it lacks a crossguard which can be used offensively. And as I said before, it is not a straight blade (unless you have a choku-to) which diminishes your ability to thrust, which can be a very deceptive technique that many people tend to overlook at times.

A Chinese straight sword, or Tai Chi sword. There is a Chinese weapon identical to the Japanese Katana, it is a Chinese saber . In Chinese culture it is said that it takes 10 days to master the saber, but 1,000 days to master the straight sword. This refers to the amount of time need to train to become effective with a weapon, this also refers to the sophistication of it's use. The straight sword is a little longer than the Katana and is double edged, there are many more moves a fighter can use with the straight sword IMO.

If you're asking in terms of ONLY hand-to-hand (melee) weapons... any pole-arm would give you a distinctive advantage over a katana (simply because of the longer reach and added strength of the larger weapon)

I think the best weapon against a katana would simply be brains and skill... a novice with a katana could be cut to ribbons against a trained fighter wielding a steak-knife.

In today's modern world I would want to use a projectile weapon like a gun against an opponent with a sword.

Well this is a general question do u mean wat other non-firearm/distance weapon or just any weapon watsoever?

non firearm (this is assuming you know how to use any weapon you desire) i would choose sais because sais were designed to fight against katanas and snap them

otherwise i would go with a Streetsweeper which is if you don't know an automatic shotgun
