The sheer amount of contradictions in the bible purporting to come from the same source would rule out any possibility of there being a remotely omnipotent being behind it. Further, can someone please explain the amount of gratuitous violence supposedly ordered to be carried out agains various ethnic groups in the name of the Lord? Isn't S/He supposed to be a nice being?

I don't know how to answer the violence, I often question God about it myself, the best I can say is that I have no right to do so, He is God and does things for a reason.
But the contradictions I can give you a link to help clear up, if you are really interested in a point of view that's not biased?

It has also been selectively edited by men and their churches over the centuries. This is one of the reasons for it's ethnic bent.
I know we think we have a violent society today, but religious, tribal and cultural wars are a part of every civilisations history. The people of the Bible were no different.
It certainly looses some of it's spiritual authenticity in some of the more tempestuous parts.
By the time it reaches the later scriptures and the New Testament it is a book of Men rather than their God.

You don't know the Bible. There are no contradictions. In a couple of places it seems like there could be, but God will eventually make these known to us. The Bible does not say that God is nice. God is love, a Judge, a Spirit, a Consuming Fire, a Creator and we are told to fear God. God is the Potter and we are the clay. Jeremiah tells us the consequences that we will suffer when we forget God, reject God, turn our backs on God and disobey God. The Bible says that it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of Almighty God. What is there not to fear about omnipresence, omniscience and omnipotence? God clearly says if you do this I'll do this. God clearly states there are consequences to disobedience. God is NICE as any father is nice if you obey Him. If you do not obey God, God is not nice.

I agree with you in a way, let me explain.
(these are my beleifs and i am not forcing on anyone else)

The bible (i beleive) was originally written by god as a guide for those living in his creation. Unfortunatly as time has passed the bible has been changed for the purpose of innovation and alteration. God, seeing his words being changed, sent down the Quran in order to ensure that mankind was clear on how they should lead their lives.

The Quran has never been changed. I suggest you read it, you will get alot more sense out of it than a book changed, as you said "by men for men"

name me any contradiction and i will answer it for you. And as for the wars carried out in God's name...what does that tell you about the religion? The Bible condemns todays warfare and so any religion that gets involved obviously doesn't have God's approval. Most religions don't follow the bible, that doesn't mean that God doesn't exist. If a mechanic gave you a manual on repairing your car and you didn't follow its instructions, would you say that mechanic didn't know what he was talking about if your car went wrong?

The reason why people think there are contradictions in the bible is because it is being read incorrectly. The OT has been fulfill by Jesus. The NT is what we are to follow. Obviously, we are to follow the ten commandments from the OT but the teachings of Jesus in the NT is what we are to live by.

I believe some parts of the bible were written by well-meaning individuals to describe their experience with God. Some parts were written by clergy to keep their flocks under control. But even if you do not believe in God or religion or anything, You cannot go wrong if you practice what Jesus taught. Just the words of Jesus not even his disciples interpretation. Nowhere does Jesus condone anything but peace and respect for your neighbor. I belong to no religion. But I do try to follow Jesus' teachings.

No, there are millions of people who think as you do. But many of us believe that the author of he Bible is God. We do not see the contradictions in it that you do because we view it from a totally different perspective. It comes down to the realization that each one of us has the right to believe as we wish.

We have been given the gift of free will. We are not robots, we can choose what we want to do and when it doesn't work out as oft times it don't we can't blame ourselves because we are "perfect" we blame God. Simple eh?

Since time begun billions of people have walked this earth, but there is only one God, so lets blame Him for all our misfortunes.
A nice easy way out.
