Good question. What GOD means by that is : if you do a good deed like give food to the homeless or pay a bill for your neighbour in need or help the blind and so on ..... those are all very nice things to do / good deeds , but none of those things will get you to heaven UNLESS you do it for Jesus ( to honor Jesus) meaning " I,am going to the homeless shelter today , because it would honor Jesus to give some of my time to the Lord and I want to do that for him " But if you say "I,am going to go to the homeless shelter today ,because I,am just such a good person and I want to show everybody what good of a person I,am " that is a deed that is empty in gods eyes ,because you did it for yourself not for him ( you had the wrong motive).Basically if you do not believe that Jesus died on the cross for you , but you are a very good person and do a lot of nice things it does not do you any good you will go straight to hell , but if you do believe that Jesus died on the cross for you then you are saved and all good deeds you do ( through Jesus ) will honor god and god will reward you with many blessings in his own way( Salvation is obviosly his biggest gift). So make sure you are on the right side my friend !!!!

I wouldn't say they are worthless ...they just will not give you salvation. As a matter off fact..as a bark is to a dog..so are good deeds to a Christian..just something that comes naturally.
Bad deeds are also natural to a sinner...just part of the package unfortunately..even if you are one of the rare ones..who can have an evil heart of unbelief, yet still do good things..you could never do enough of them to be like God. To be Holy..and that is the requirement to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Um no. It's not about what you DO it's about what you BELIEVE. If you're doing bad deeds not that will just get you to Hell its the reason you do bad deeds the lack of God in your life!

Not true. Catholics are the majority of christians around the world, and good deeds DO count for them.
There is also a number of other denominations who think good deeds (or "works" as some call them) count for something.

You cannot get to heaven based on anything you do
Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Good deeds or bad is not what we are judged by. We are to accept the perfect sacrifice offered us on the cross and that is Jesus. No other payment will suffice for your sins before a holy God. Trust Jesus and go to heaven. Deny him and you choose hell fire.

they mean that by only doing good things is not enough to save you or to bring you to heaven. Without Jesus in your heart or if you have not yet accepted Him as your one and only saviour or God, Good deeds are worthless.
