Religious people use every extreme example as proof they are right and that God is on their side. Its how to convince weak minded people to join their cause.

Mentioning Virginia Tech was to show that the video was recorded recently. So that anyone on the tape that authorities claim to have killed is shown to be alive and well.
The threats themselves were intended not as a warning, but as misdirection. This way they can keep the fear level high without actually having to do anything.
Their next attack will probably target our still vulnerable seaports. Most likely, the East Coast Oil Ports. That would trigger the most disruption and get an assist in disrupting the economy from Big Oil using it as an excuse to profit from $5 a gallon gas.

Al Qaeda would obviously like to prevent private ownership of firearms in the United States, just as they would like to prevent armed flight deck crews and reduce the number of air marshals or any other means of opposing their terrorist activities and intentions. And the liberal gun-haters like Charles Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi are playing right into their hands.

Because to the radical Islamic mind, its another shining example of western decadence, and is an opportunity to throw in our face some of our own shortcomings. Hmmm look what radical Muslims do to each other in the Palestinian territories, do they really have room to talk?

It was probably because they think it is hilarious that despite a bunch of big talk about protecting America from muslim terrorists, Americans are being killed by south koreans.
