we are replacing our shower-tub combo. It is over 30 years old . It is fiber glass. In the long run say 20 years should we install another combo unit or go with a procilin tub and a tile shower? What is the easist to maintain?

I have done countless remodels and one set up that works really well is to install an American Standard Americast tub. It is the composite replacement of the old castiron tub and has a porcelan finish. It is also very sturdy and durable. It will not crack and split like a steel tub or fiberglass. Install a good pressure balance faucet so you do not get scalded or frozen. And then consider cultured marble instead of tile. It is awesome. No grout lines to clean or tile to come off, the only place where you have joints is the corners, lot less likely to leak. They can swirl all different kinds of colors to match any bathroom decor. They can install soap and shampoo into the cultured marble or they can put a corner shelf so that makes it easy. The panels are also custom measured and made so if the bathroom is not exactly square or plumb that is not an issue. I have found that cultured marble is about 10% more than tile but it is well worth the cost. No grout to clean, just wipe down the walls. When you install a cultured marble surround with an Americast tub, then you have years of good service.

If you can afford it replace it with a porcelain and tile tub and surround. Fiberglass scratches easily and then the dirt gets in the scratches and makes cleaning it difficult. Porcelain and tile are much easier to clean because the surface stays smooth because they can take much more abuse.

Porcelain tubs with tile surrounds are beautiful and can really add value to your home, but are more expensive and harder to keep clean (grout, etc). One-piece shower/tub combo units are nice and easy to clean. They are also more cost effective and easier/quicker to install.

Good luck!

you may desire to purchase warmth lamps, purely verify you do no longer placed them next to something that would desire to seize on fireplace AND you would be wanting to show them off! i might additionally advise a towel heater. you may desire to purchase towel racks which incredibly warmth up and get your towels all heat for you, so once you get out of the bathe you are able to heat up in one. i've got seen them in countless magazines, and think of places like the Sharper image might carry them.
