Well, the first time an animal had to be sacrificed in the Bible was in the garden when Adam and Eve sinned. The Lord had to do this to cover their shame, the fig leaves was their feeble attempt but God required a blood offering.

I was going to answer, but I saw 2 correct answers already...Oh well...the first sacrifice for sin was in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned...All throughout the Bible we see that for sin there neeeds to be a blood sacrifice...so to cover their sin God had to kill a animal...in the old testament people did lamb sacrifices and in the new testament Jesus Christ is our sacrifice for our sin....Hope this helps you!

Actually it was when God slew two animals to make coverings for Adam and Eve. He was showing that their sin was only covered by a blood sacrifice.

Cain and Abel's is the first human one mentioned. God killing animals for their skin to cloth Adam and Eve is the "prototype" for all blood sacrifice and a foreshadowing of Jesus' crucifixion.
