There is nothing wrong with using a treadmill. The key is supervision. I've been using them to condition for dogshows for the last 20+ years.
Start with a walking warm up for 3-5 minutes. (If the dog is overweight, let the dog continue at a walk watching for panting or other signs the dog is tiring.)
Most dogs can be taken up to a comfortable trot. That is the key to achieving maximum from the workout. I watch for panting, then ask them to trot an additional 2-3 minutes before taking them back down for a cool down walk. I time everything and then construct a schedule that fits the dog and what I'm trying to achieve (weight loss, conditioning, just burning energy). Generally, I add 5-7 minutes a day to the time. I've got some dogs that can have a complete workout in 30 minutes (5-20-5) and others that need an hour (5-50-5).
This isn't a substitute for regular walking and playing, just an additional tool.

Human treadmills are dangerous to use for dogs. They do make dog treadmills, but they are very exensive. These are reallymeant for those doing active sports with their dogs like hunting. The average dog just needs a good walk and maybe some free running everyday.
Ceasar Millan is a fake. He believes exercising a dog half to death will cure every and all behavior problems. Yes, keeping the dog so tired he can't do anything will appear to solve the problem, but what happens if the dog does not get his 2 - 4 hrs on the treadmill every day.
I agree with the others. Get out and walk your dog!

In Fl the temperature can reach over 100, very humid degrees so I use a treadmill too for my dogs. It is fun and they like it too. Depending on the size and drive of the dog, between 15-30 minutes on a medium setting. Try that outside in the summer down here sometime and see how quickly you end up in the hospital. Good luck to you.

If you are going to do this I would only do it under close adult supervision, ans a slow to moderate speed that is comfy for each individual dog. I used to own several Jack Rusells so I know how hyper they can be, I don't think It's being lazy, I just think you need to be careful. I would do it until 5min, if still full of energy do it another 5 and so on you may end up with a 30 min. walker/ runner. lol good luck!!

Tread mills are not made for dogs. Because a man who has been working with dogs most of his life does it, it dosent mean you should try it.
It would be safer to just walk the dogs.

I suppose half an hour at a moderate walking pace?
Just remember that running on a treadmill is no substitute for a walk out with you... Walking outdoors give them the physical and psychological stimulation that walking on a treadmill does not. Walking with you by their side will also help build your relationship.

i personally wouldnt use a treadmill. dogs like the different smells while outside on their walks. this is also a bonding time between you and your dog, and gives you exercise too. be careful with having a treadmill. they are illegal to own where i am, because most of the dog fighters use them for training.

You shouldn't use those devices- take the dogs out for walks and spend time every day training them instead.
You really shouldn't do things just because the Dog Whisperer does it- it even says on the screen that you shouldn't try that stuff.

No offense to you personally but this really shows how fat and lazy human beings are getting 'how can I exercise my dog while I sit on my butt and do nothing?'.
My dog runs with me while I jog or ride my bike. He walks with me while I walk- he needs exercise but so do I and so do you.
